Two new principals were named to head Cape Girardeau elementary schools Monday; both are women, first to lead any of city's public schools since 1957, when Lyda Gibbs became principal at Jefferson; Barbara Kohlfeld was appointed principal of May Greene School, and Barbara Blanchard, who has been interim principal at Washington School, was named permanent principal.

Scott City has paid its first quarterly dues to Cape Girardeau Area Industrial Recruitment Association, but not out of city's pocket; exactly whose pockets money came from wasn't disclosed; Scott City Chamber of Commerce received $1,250 "gift" through Regional Commerce and Growth Association to pay its first quarter dues to recruitment association.

25 years ago: April 27, 1978

After reviewing developments and alternatives connected with proposed city-school swimming pool project, school board faces difficult choice; controversy centers around bids received on prime contract for project, which covers bathhouse and site work.

There will be no intervisitation program in Southeast Missouri State University housing units for students, Board of Regents says; board goes along with recommendation by school president, Dr. Robert E. Leestamper, that present program of open house which permits students of opposite sexes to visit in their rooms but not behind closed doors, be continued.

50 years ago: April 27, 1953

Dr. Sylvester Doggett, who nearly 10 years ago gave Cape Special Road District provisional deed for large tract of land at Broadway and U.S. 61 in Cape Girardeau for city park purposes, says he has engaged law firm to bring suit to have deed annulled so property would revert to him because terms of contract haven't been complied with.

Comprehensive set of recommendations that will completely revamp Cape Girardeau's educational program, modernizing it from kindergarten through high school, is approved by school board; superintendent L.J. Schultz submits three-page list of suggestions to board.

75 years ago: April 27, 1928

With record number of contestants, 23rd annual revival of Southeast Missouri high school oratorical and athletic meet is under way, with opening literary events taking place in afternoon at Teachers College; crowd of hundreds is expected tomorrow for closing events.

E.G. Buchanan of Sikeston, representative of Boyer Fire Apparatus Co., of Logansport, Ind., passes through Cape Girardeau on his way to New Madrid to deliver that town's first fire truck; fire equipment is mounted on International 1 half-ton chassis and cost $5,450.
