Tickets for Cape home to benefit St. Jude's

Tickets for a chance to win a $275,000 "Dream Home" in Cape Girardeau are now on sale in a campaign to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Organizers are selling 7,000 tickets in the drawing to be broadcast live during the St. Jude Give-Away on KFVS on June 22.

Those who purchase a ticket on or before May 1 will be eligible to win a year's worth of free groceries from Country Mart and still be eligible to win the "Dream Home."

Founded by Danny Thomas in 1962, St. Jude has treated more than 19,000 young cancer patients at no cost to their families. Call (800) 382-8604 for more information.

Housing workshops in Cape scheduled

A series of housing workshops to provide information to Cape Girardeau residents who live on rental property and to individuals and families who are interested in learning whether they may qualify to own their own home have been scheduled.

A tenant training workshop will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Salvation Army, 701 Good Hope; a workshop to promote home ownership (two sessions) will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and 6:30 to 8 p.m. May 6 at the Family Resource Center, 1202 S. Sprigg.

Both workshops will have refreshments and door prizes. Childcare will be available at both workshops, but in the evening only at the home ownership workshop.

Sale to benefit Christian outreach, education

The First Presbyterian Church, 206 E. Washington, Jackson, will hold its annual basement sale from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 7 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Pastor Grant Gillard's tomato plants and geraniums will be featured, along with a variety of basement sale items.

Proceeds from the sale will be used for Christian education and outreach programs locally.

Center to hold 'Taste of Southern Illinois'

The Union County Child Advocacy Center will hold the "True Taste of Southern Illinois" from 1 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Great Boars of Fire Lodge in Anna, Ill.

It is a day filled with food from Great Boars of Fire, music, wine tasting, auctions, door prizes and local musicians.

All proceeds will benefit children served at the center. For more information, call (866) 942-4453.

The mission of the center is to reduce the trauma experienced by child abuse victims. The Advocacy Center serves the child victims of sexual and severe physical abuse in Alexander, Pulaski and Union counties in Southern Illinois.

Car wash to raise money for camp trip

Young Life Christians will wash cars for free from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Jackson Tire Center in Jackson. Donations will help raise money for their summer camp trip.

The car wash will take place rain or shine.

Open house set for 50th wedding anniversary

Dorothy Stoffregen and Carson Leon Kelley Sr., married 50 years, will celebrate their anniversary from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday at an open house at the Delta Community Center. Their three sons and their wives are hosts of the celebration.

Week recognizes St. Francis volunteers

St. Francis Medical Center is holding volunteer week this week to recognize the dedication and hard work of 450 volunteers who've donated 69,000 hours of their time in 2002.

Services delivered by volunteers include presenting scholarships, making quilts, donating money, coordinating "Lifeline" and "Telecare" (programs that check on those living alone, disabled or recovering from surgery), providing funds for patients who need emergency assistance, coordinating activities of hospital gift shops who use funds for needed equipment and programs, giving youths the opportunity to volunteer, presenting flowers, establishing a regional nursing library and pampering patients through beauty shop services.

Juror Appreciation Week runs through Friday

Juror Appreciation Week runs today through Friday. Developed by the Missouri Bar Association about five years ago. The purpose of the event is make jurors aware their participation and the sacrifices they make for the system to work is appreciated. A first-time proclamation was signed by circuit judges and the city council to promote awareness in the community. Doughnuts are on the agenda for all jurors serving during Juror Appreciation Week.

Juror names are randomly selected quarterly by computer from a pool of licensed drivers and registered voters.

Jackson class of 1943 to hold informal reunion

The Jackson High School Class of 1943 is planning an informal get together at 11 a.m. May 21 at Ryan's Steak House in Cape Girardeau.

Interested individuals should call Marge Grindstaff at 243-2279 or Ruth Nischwitz at 243-4875 by May 7.
