According to a recent national survey, more than 54 million people are informal or unpaid caregivers. Caregiving spouses, children and other family members and friends provide an invaluable service to the nation's elderly (and not so elderly).

A retreat for caregivers will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at the Recreational Complex in the Clinton Building in Sikeston, Mo. The retreat is sponsored by the Southeast Missouri Area Agency on Aging, the Alzheimer's Association and Senior Lifestyles at Missouri Delta Medical Center.

Designed as a fun and relaxing day for caregivers to "get away" for a while, there will be door prizes, a free lunch and time to enjoy getting a manicure, learn about aroma therapy, gardening and arts and crafts. Other activities include learning about golf and fishing. A "quiet corner" will be available to just sit and read a magazine.
