Club news 5/7/03

American Legion Post 158

The Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Post 158 of Jackson met April 8. Commander Byron Fluegge opened the meeting. Pete Gardner and Vernon LeGrand were guests.

Richard Aguilar gave the financial report. The March meeting minutes were approved. P.M. Kurre reported 579 paid members.

Lou Crites announced that flags would be placed at the Jackson City Cemetery for Memorial Day at 5 p.m. on May 23, and at Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson at 8 a.m. on May 24. The flags will remain on display until picked up on May 27.

Bill Poe gave the clubroom report and announced that Homecomers will be the third week of August.

The flag committee reported three flags were given out.

Jim Nelson reported a contribution was made to the American Legion Post 158 Memorial Scholarship fund by Robert Hutson in memory of Glen Starzinger.

Charles Hutson made a motion to move chairs to the Old City Cemetery for the Memorial Day program. Motion seconded and passed. Hutson also announced that the two boys selected to represent the Post at Boys' State this year are Adam Davis and Jacob Adams.

The past commanders' meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. May 21 at Delmonico's Restaurant.

Ken Koehler thanked the post for its support during his recent tragedy. He also called for the second vote on $3,000 for support of ball teams for this year. The motion was seconded and passed.

Jack Latimer gave the nomination committee report. By office they were: for commander, Leonard Adams and Virgil Whitner; first vice commander, Kurre; second vice commander, Mark Dambach; adjutant, Richard Decker; finance officer, David Ludwig and Aguilar; historian, Jim Nelson; chaplain, Koehler and Charlie Shultz; trustees, Leonard Bodenschatz, Crites, Eugene Wilson and Keith Seabaugh; service officer, Poe; sergeant at arms, Harry Trust and Keith Hanes. Nominations from the floor were called for each office three times. No nominations were received. Election of officers will be held in July and installation will be in August.

A second vote was called for to buy a computer for up to $1,500. Motion made, seconded and passed.

It was announced that the janitor had resigned and that Laurentius and Adams will take those duties and will be paid on an hourly basis.

Harlan Siebert announced that a rally for support of the troops will be held the second Saturday of every month at the VFW Hall in Cape Girardeau at 11 a.m.

Fluegge said cards and envelopes are available in packs of 10 for $6 or two packs for $10 from him or can be bought in the clubroom.

The meeting was closed and members adjourned to the dining room for a meal provided by the Ladies Auxiliary.

Alpha Rho

Alpha Rho of Beta Sigma Phi met May 1 at My Daddy's Cheesecake.

Erma Vaughan brought the program, "Open Book."

Eleven members attended the Founder's Day dinner held April 24 at Centenary United Methodist Church with chapter Beta Gamma were hosts of the meeting.

Recognition was received from St. Francis Medical Center for a $50 donation to the kidney dialysis center in memory of Rudell Childers, a former member.

The next meeting will be held at 1 p.m. on May 15 at the home of Loretta Atkins. New officers will be installed, ritual given for new member, Mary Ann Nenninger, and the 50-year ritual for five members of the chapter will be given.

Exchange Club

The Exchange Club of Cape Girardeau met April 15 at Port Cape Girardeau.

Ferd Sturm is working on the Young Citizenship Award and is trying to schedule the program for this month. The Youth of the Year program is scheduled for May 20. Spouses are invited to attend.

The members wish Vernon Auer a quick recovery from his accident.

The club picnic is scheduled for June 3 at Shelter 22 at Cape County Park South. Spouses and Exchangettes are invited. The club will furnish the meat and drinks. Members and spouses are asked to bring the following: A to D, veggies; E to Q, desserts; and R to Z, salads. Cletus Todt and crew will start cooking around 3 p.m. and dinner will be at 6 p.m.

Wonderworkers FCE

The Wonderworkers FCE Club met March 13 at the home of Jeanette Welker. A devotion was read by the hostess.

Plans were made for All Clubs Day. Also, the upcoming training meeting was announced.

Jeanette Hickam had a crafts program.

The club met April 10 at the home of Nell Kieninger. The hostess had a devotion titled "Lasting Peace," and Psalm 1. Margie E. Reisenbichler presided at the meeting. Volunteer hours were collected.

June Landgraf presented the program and demonstrated how to make decorated plates with fabric. Each member made a plate.
