Women's camping event scheduled this weekend

Council president gives appreciation certificate

Cape Girardeau County Extension Council president David Ludwig recently presented a certifcate of appreciation to the Cape Girardeau County Commission. The certificate was in recognition for financial support for the Cape Girardeau County Outreach and Extension Council to improve resdients' lives through high-quality education.

During University Outreach and Extension Week, which runs through Saturday, the impact of educational programs provided to residents on the county level from the four University of Missouri campuses and Lincoln University in Jefferson City are recognized.

For more than 90 years in Cape Girardeau County, Extension has been helping people solve problems and improve their quality of life with research-based information.

University Outreach and Extension also provides flexible program access through the statewide TeleCenter Network, where citizens can access the Internet and take classes through videoconferencing without having to travel to campus. Cemetery association to hold annual meeting

The annual meeting of the Old Goshen Cemetery Association will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the cemetery, north of Oak Ridge on County Road 427. A business meeting and short memorial service will be held.

Scott County genealogy society to meet Tuesday

The Scott County Historical and Genealogy Society will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Riverside Regional Library in Benton, Mo. The organization meets at 7 p.m. on the third Tuesday of the month at the Scott County Courthouse in Benton. Nonmembers are welcome at all meetings.

FBLA to sponsor youth dance on Friday

The Jackson Chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America will hold a youth dance from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Friday. The dance, held at the Jackson Jaycees Community Center (formerly Stroder Country), will have a Hawaiian theme. Students in grades six to eight are invited and will be charged admission; Jackson FBLA parents and advisers will chaperone. Music and concessions will be available.

Preservation group to hold reception

The Cape Girardeau Historic Preservation Commission will hold a reception celebrating Historic Preservation Month from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Cape Girardeau City Hall. Members of the Southeast Missouri Historic Preservation Alliance are requested to introduce their organizations.

The Historic Preservation Commission will hold its regularly scheduled monthly meeting immediately following.

Plaque to be dedicated to crime victims

A tree and plaque dedication for victims of crime is planned for May 28 at Cape Girardeau County Park North. Rep. Scott Lipke, R-Jackson, Cape Girardeau police chief Steve Strong and Prosecuting Attorney Morley Swingle are expected to speak briefly.
