Two tie in club's Friday couples play

Two foursomes tied for first place Friday night in the Cape Girardeau Country Club Friday Night Couples.

The team of Ron Livorsi, Robyn Young and Roger and Deb Mealy tied with Steve and Lisa Bjelich and Bill (Sr.) and Janet White.

Notre Dame camps are taking place

Notre Dame Regional High School's summer camps began earlier this month.

Sports camps that begin Monday include: Lady Bulldog Basketball Camp I for students entering third through fifth grades and those entering sixth through eighth grades ($60); Bulldog Baseball Camp for those entering third through eighth grades ($60); and Pee Wee Baseball Camp for those entering kindergarten through second grades ($40). The camps will conclude June 24.

More basketball and volleyball camps are scheduled for later in the summer.

Central runner Kipper wins Tywappity 5K

John Kipper of Cape Girardeau defeated a field of 65 runners to capture the Tywappity Trails 5-kilometer run on June 4 near Chaffee.

Kipper's time of 18 minutes was just 9 seconds off the course record of 17:51 set last year by Bryan Kelpe. Kipper recently finished his junior year at Central, where he runs cross country and track.

Stephanie Bennett of Chaffee once again was the top female finisher with a time of 24:50.

Cody Green of Millersville established a new youth record of 22:11, which bettered Grant Hengs' 2001 record by 19 seconds.

Peter Blums of Puxico was the top masters division finisher with a time of 27:50.

Kluesner, Vandeven win horseshoes tourney

Kory Kluesner and Jake Vandeven topped the field of 16 to win the Southeast Missouri Horseshoes Association event Sunday at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Leopold.

Greg Scherer and Jake Kluesner placed second, while John Vandeven and Cori Stoverink were third.

The association this weekend has tournaments Saturday at Oran Park and Sunday at the Backyard Horseshoes Club in Glenallen, Mo. Both events start at 1 p.m.

Tripp tops Maupin at Sikeston Drag Strip

Roger Tripp of Fredericktown captured the Super Pro division at the Sikeston Drag Strip on June 4.

Tripp averaged 134.24 mph in an elapsed time of 5.212 seconds with a dial-in of 5.21. His reaction time was .535 seconds.

Jack Maupin of Cape Girardeau finished second in 6.020 seconds with a dial-in of 5.99. His speed was 114.56 mph and his reaction time was .512.

Cleats of Fire meet this weekend

The Road to New Orleans North vs. South AAU track and field meet is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at Poplar Bluff, Mo.

Athletes ages 13 to 18 may compete in one of four divisions. Meet registration is due today.

Top-four finishers advance to a meet in Joplin, Mo., July 2 and 3 to compete against athletes from Arkansas, Oklahoma and Kansas.

Preliminaries will be Saturday and finals on Sunday.
