Vacation Bible school set at local churches

* Lighthouse Bible Baptist Church will hold an Extreme Adventure vacation Bible school for children ages 5 to 12 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 1 to 5. For more information, call 335-1629.

* Cape Bible Chapel will hold its "Serengeti Trek" vacation Bible school July 18 to 22. The event begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 11:45 a.m. Children entering first through sixth grade are invited to attend. For information, phone 334-5948 or www.capebiblechapel.org.

* Hobbs Chapel United Methodist Church will hold its vacation Bible school from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 1 to 5 for children. An "ark landing" event is planned for Aug. 7 at the church. Pastor Janet Hopkins will lead an adult class. For information or to register, call 334-3080.

* Day Spring Missionary Baptist Church will hold a vacation Bible school from 6 to 9 p.m. July 18 to 22. Registration begins at 5:30 p.m. July 18. For information, call 335-2998.

* Christ Episcopal Church, First Presbyterian Church and Iglesia El Shaddai will sponsor a "Jesus in the Neighborhood" vacation Bible school Aug. 4 to 6 at Christ Episcopal Church. Events are from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 4 and 5 and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 6. A supper is served each evening. Children ages 4 to 12 are invited to attend. First Baptist youths attend Passport camp

Five youths and four adults from First Baptist Church of Cape Girardeau recently attended Passport Youth Camp at Stetson University in Deland, Fla. Becky Komorech, Donna Komorech, Drew Lincoln, Danielle Pritchett, Aaron Shupert, Andrew Shupert, Mike Shupert, Elliott Swoboda and Gina Yarbrough attended the camp, which balances camping and mission work, Bible study and fun, personal reflection and group worship.

Trinity Lutheran church sponsors card party

Trinity Lutheran Ladies Senior Aid will sponsor a card party from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Aug. 12. Proceeds from the party will fund church-related projects. Refreshments and attendance prizes will be furnished. For ticket information, call 335-3476.

Missouri Baptist leader to visit area church

Dr. David Clippard, a native of Jackson, and executive director for the Missouri Baptist Convention, will visit Shawnee Hills Baptist Church in Jackson July 24. Clippard will speak at the 10:30 a.m. service that day. He and his wife, Suzanna, are both Jackson natives.

Hobbs Chapel UMC will play host to Larry Hanning at 9 a.m. for a presentation on the Gideons. The Gideons are a nondenominational group that provides Bibles and New Testaments free of charge. An offering to support the ministry will be collected.

David and Carol Taylor, General Baptist missionaries to the Philippines, will be speaking during the 10:30 a.m. service at First General Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau.

The Rev. Elbridge Bartley will be the guest preacher during the 10:30 a.m. worship at Grace United Methodist Church. Bartley is the second of four former pastors at the church who are speaking as part of the congregation's 150th anniversary celebrations. Bartley served as pastor for Grace from 1976 to 1981.

Vincentian Marian Youth will meet at 6 p.m. for an outdoor worship and Mass at the grotto at St. Mary's of the Barrens in Perryville. The VMY band will play. Lawn chairs and blankets are suggested; no other seating is available. Pizza will be served after the service.

St. Paul Lutheran Church in Jackson will hold a "Healing the Wounded" seminar for spiritual renewal. The seninar begins at 6:30 p.m. and continues Monday night. Carl H. Miller, pastor of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Olmsted, Ill., and chaplain at Tamms Correctional Center, will lead the seminar. An offering will be collected to help defray his expenses. Monday

Westside Church of God will kick off its Serengeti Trek vacation Bible school from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday for children in kindergarten up to 5th grade. For more information, call 335-2124.

Day Spring Missionary Baptist Church will begin its vacation Bible school with registration at 5:30 p.m. For more information, call 335-2998.

Thursday

Vincentian Marian Youth's "Youth Adoring Christ" event will be held at 7 p.m. at the Shrine Church in Perryville. The service include an adoration and benediction, with music lead by youth.
