Heartland softball team posts win at World Series

The Heartland Nationals 12-and-under girls softball team picked up its first win in pool play at the 2005 Babe Ruth World Series with a 9-7 victory over Concord, Calif.

The Nationals, based in Scott City and representing the Midwest Plains region, finished with a 1-3 pool play record in the tournament at Cherry Hill, N.J.

Concord jumped out to a 7-1 lead after four innings, but the Nationals bounced back with six runs in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game.

In the top of the seventh, Jane Morrill scored the go-ahead run on an error by the catcher, and Brooke Glastetter scored on Lindsey Hadley's sacrifice fly to make it 9-7.

Rachel Reed replaced Glastetter on the mound in the bottom of the last frame and allowed no hits and no runs to preserve the win. Glastetter pitched the first six innings, allowing seven runs off five hits to earn the victory.

Glastetter led the Nationals at the plate with two hits and two runs scored. Kaitlin Glastetter, Hayley Glastetter, Danielle Gibbons and Amanda Williams each added a hit for Heartland.

Heatland had six hits and three errors, while Concord finished with five hits and four errors. Only two of Heartland's nine runs were earned.

Jackson falls

At the Cal Ripken World Series in Aberdeen, Md., the Jackson 12-year-old baseball team fell to 0-2 in pool play with a 10-0 loss to Raleigh, N.C., in five innings Monday night.

Bobby Clark and Logan Bartels worked on the mound for Jackson in the loss.

Jackson takes a day off today, plays at noon Wednesday at noon against host Harvord County, Md. and concludes pool play Thursday.
