Scott fails to qualify in NCAA long jump

Southeast Missouri State University senior Shelton Scott failed to qualify for the finals during Wednesday's long jump preliminaries of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif.

Scott, the only Ohio Valley Conference athlete to qualify for the national meet, fouled on two of his three attempts and posted a jump of 17 feet 11 1/2 inches to rank last among the 27 competitors. His season-best was 25-6 1/2. Wednesday's top distance was 26-1 1/2. The top 12 qualified for the finals.

Scott also qualified for nationals in the triple jump and will compete in those preliminaries today.

Three Southeast baseball players gain more honors

The awards keep rolling in for several Southeast Missouri University baseball players.

Pitcher Tim Alvarez and second baseman Justin Christian, who have both received third-team All-American honors, were picked for the All-South Region first team Wednesday by the American Baseball Coaches Association. Southeast shortstop Zach Borowiak made the second team.

Alvarez was 14-3 this season, set a school record for wins and was the Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher of the Year. He was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 36th round last week.

Christian was the OVC Rookie of the Year this season after finishing in the top 10 in 10 statistical categories. He batted .376 with 13 home runs and 48 runs batted in.

Borowiak set career highs this season and hit .372 with 15 homers and 59 RBIs. He was drafted in the 14th round by the Boston Red Sox.

Southeast was one of three teams, joining Southern Mississippi and South Carolina, with two players on the first team.

Capahas move Riverdogs game to Sunday afternoon

The Cape Girardeau Craftsman Union Capahas' baseball game against the Cape Girardeau Riverdogs that was rained out Wednesday night will be played Sunday at 1 p.m. at Capaha Field.

In addition, the Capahas' game at Saline County (Ill.) that was rained out Tuesday night will be made up as part of a 6 p.m. home doubleheader June 27.

Also, the Capahas have added Central High School graduate Justin Welker to their roster. Welker, after playing two seasons at Mineral Area College, was a redshirt this year at Central Missouri State, which won the NCAA Division II national title.

The Capahas will put their 9-0 record on the line Friday when Waterloo (Ill.) visits Capaha Field for a 7:30 p.m. game. Murray State pitcher Kyle Perry is slated to make his first start of the year for the Capahas.

Cape, Jackson open Arkansas tournament

The Cape Girardeau Ford & Sons and Jackson Senior American Legion baseball teams will participate in the Jonesboro (Ark.) Tournament today through Sunday.

Cape is in a pool with Arkansas teams Sylvan Hills, Paragould and Batesville. Ford & Sons begins play today with a 2:15 p.m. game against Sylvan Hills.

Jackson is in a pool with Arkansas squads Sheridan and Jonesboro, along with Oxford (Miss.). Jackson plays today at 1 p.m. against Sheridan.

Ford & Sons is 2-1, while Jackson is 9-3 and 0-1 in District 14 play after losing to Poplar Bluff 6-1 Monday.

The District 14 game between Cape and Jackson that was rained out Tuesday has been rescheduled for July 10 at 6 p.m. in Jackson.

Browns, Winks win in Chip-A-Ways scramble

The Chip-A-Ways hosted a mixed scrambles tournament Sunday:

Carol and Ken Brown won in flight A with Carolyn and Mike Blechle second and Lillian and Larry Angle third. Bev and Jim Wink won flight B with Mary and John Vancleve second and Fay and Ollie Harris third.

Carol Brown sank her first hole-in-one during the event.

Also, of Deanna Peterman and Sharon Dow won their class at Hidden Trails Country Club recently.
