Ford and Sons knocked out of tournament

Ford and Sons Cape Girardeau Senior American Legion baseball team was knocked out of the Jonesboro, Ark., tournament after a 10-4 loss to Batesville on Saturday.

Lee Essner gave up seven runs in the first two innings and took the loss.

Ford and Sons left 13 runners on base in the seven-inning game. John Thies hit a bases loaded double in the fifth to drive in a pair of runs.

Ford and Sons (3-3) went 1-2 in pool play.

A's sweep Yankees in doubleheader

The Orthopedic Associates Senior Babe Ruth A's scored 28 runs in two games to sweep the Senior Babe Ruth Yankees on Saturday.

In the first game the Yankees (0-6) made eight errors as the A's (9-1) won 12-0. Lucas McMahan pitched all five innings, giving up just one hit and fanning six.

Jeff Brosey had a double and a pair of RBIs, and Andrew Prater also had two RBIs.

The A's scored 14 runs in the first inning of the second game on just three hits. Starter Gabe Edwards lasted for just two outs and the Yankees walked 10 batters in the inning.

Mark Dunaway got the win and had two hits, including a solo home run. Kyle Wilson had two RBIs and a double. Tim Davis added a three-run double.

Cape Riverdogs edge Fairview Heights

The Riverdogs, playing for the first time in nearly two weeks due to rain, won a tight battle with Fairview Heights (Ill.) 5-4 in Sikeston Friday night.

Fairview Heights led 4-1 after five innings, scoring three unearned runs against Riverdogs starter Steve Fowler. Cape fought back with two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to take the lead. Bobby Landers pitched two hitless innings to seal the win.

Brian Austin led the Riverdogs (4-4) with a 2-for-3 game. Mark Silverthorn had an RBI double and scored two runs. Adam Friga and Tatum Kitchen added doubles.

The Riverdogs were rained out for the sixth time Saturday and will play the Craftsman Union Capahas at 1 p.m. today at Capaha Park.

Brinkmeyer throws no-hitter for Jr. Legion

Jeremy Brinkmeyer threw a no-hitter as Cliff's Rent to Own Cape Junior Legion won 13-0 over Florissant Saturday in the Jefferson City Tournament.

Brinkmeyer (2-0) struck out six and walked one in the five-inning victory.

Blake Essner led an 11-hit attack by going 3-for-3 with two doubles and five RBIs. Brandon Cooper also went 3-for-3 with a double and Scott Brueckner had two hits.

Cape (13-4) later reached today's 2 p.m. championship game with a 14-7, six-inning victory over Sedalia.
