Cape is top choice

AFTER READING the article about the Lewis and Clark expedition, I thought it was refreshing that, after having seen approximately two-thirds of this country, 20 percent of the explorers settled here in Cape Girardeau. I think that the chamber of commerce and the Convention and Visitors Bureau could take that and run with it.

A fair tax

I THINK if we are going to have a fair and balanced tax, why not tax the windows in people's homes? That would be fair and balanced.

Good enough for us

TO THEY haven't found any weapons of mass destruction in Iraq? Getting rid of Saddam and his vicious friends is good enough for all of us.

Iraq gets the money

OUR PUBLIC schools are suffering so much from lack of money, yet President Bush is sending a million dollars a day over to Iraq. That is disgraceful.

It's not a tax cut

TO THOSE who are excited about the tax cut, I would love to be a fly on the wall on the day that you realize you are not actually getting a tax cut. Once again, greed has gotten in the way of common sense. People don't realize that the rich are getting the tax cut, and the people of Cape Girardeau aren't.

Campaign connection

I FIND it ironic that Gov. Bob Holden wishes to raise taxes on gambling and smoking. Conspicuously absent is his desire to raise taxes on alcohol. I would strongly suggest that someone look into the connection between contributions by Anheuser-Busch and other alcohol distributors and producers to Holden's campaign.

A losing battle

THE DEMOCRATS know they are fighting a losing battle against President Bush. That's why they will jump at any excuse to discredit our strong leader. But law-abiding citizens see through their underhanded tactics. After the attack on America by those Arab terrorists, you'd think that the Democrats would be praising the president for taking a stand. That's how loyal Americans feel. But Democrats defend the enemy in order to promote their selfish political ambitions.

Things are changing

DON'T LOSE respect for the law. The reason Hillary Clinton got by with insider trading -- making $100,000 in one day in cattle futures with a $1,000 investment -- is because Democrats ruled and controlled then, and anything goes was their operating method. But now things are changing in our culture. Criminal violators will be indicted for their crimes, and justice will prevail. That is the cultural difference between radical liberals' creed that anything goes and the conservative belief of exercising caution and discipline in conduct and taking responsibility for one's actions.

Saving America

AMERICA NOW has a strong, committed leader in President Bush. With law-abiding citizens, America will be saved.

Switching gears

NOW THAT the Dow Jones Industrial Average has jumped 18.1 percent in the last seven months, the Democrats have switched from their economy whine to the Iraqi weapons of mass destruction. What does that prove? They could have been destroyed before the war, or shipped out to Syria, Iraq's closest ally.

Pit bulls running loose

RECENTLY, THERE were two pit bull dogs running loose in the West End Boulevard-Bertling Street area. If your pet dog or cat is dead or missing, please call the Cape Girardeau Police Department.

Not everyone agrees

IT'S NOT this end of the state that runs the state. Just because this area is staunchly Republican, that doesn't mean other areas are. Some other areas happen to like Gov. Bob Holden.

It's still discrimination

DISCRIMINATORY SIN taxes, the act of penalizing one group and saving another group, should be outlawed. In all other discrimination, it's called a hate crime. To use this violation of a group's rights to raise revenue should be immediately outlawed. What ever happened to the freedom of individuals?

Thanks, Jackson Optimists

I WOULD like to say thank you to the Optimist Club in Jackson for the wonderful Kids in the Park Day. I would hope it was appreciated by all the parents who took their children to participate. Every child had the same opportunity to take part in a fun day, rich or poor. The Optimist Club sponsored it at its expense. It's too bad more clubs can't join in with children's activities as they did.
