Baseball

• Trading away a Dominican star wouldn't faze Jim Beattie. As general manager of the Expos, he once sent Pedro Martinez packing from Montreal. Beattie, former executive vice president of the Baltimore Orioles, met Friday at Fenway Park with Red Sox president Larry Lucchino. He's the fourth candidate interviewed since the departure of Theo Epstein last month.

Football

* Kansas City running back Priest Holmes, out for the rest of the season, is taking a break back home in Texas and is not thinking about retirement, his father says. There had been speculation earlier this week that Holmes might retire after seeing three medical specialists following a helmet-to-helmet collision against San Diego on Oct. 30. The player's father, Herman Morris, said Holmes is irritated and disappointed about another early end to his season but plans to be back.

Soccer

* Two-time MVP Preki headlined a group of five veterans selected to the MLS' 10th anniversary team on Friday. Preki joined fellow midfielder Jaime Moreno, defenders Eddie Pope and Jeff Agoos and goalkeeper Tony Meola. All have played every year since the league debuted.

Tennis

* Mary Pierce defeated Amelie Mauresmo 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 in all-French match at the WTA Championships on Friday night to complete round-robin play with a 3-0 record. By winning, Pierce finished first in the Black group and will play top-ranked Lindsay Davenport in Saturday's semifinals. Davenport won the Green group with a 2-1 record.

Maria Sharapova played Nadia Petrova in an all-Russian match and Kim Clijsters faced Elena Dementieva later at Staples Center. Mauresmo also advanced by finishing second in the Black group with a 2-1 mark. She will play Sharapova in the semifinals.
