Jenkins graduates with honors from Collins; Student lobby association celebrates 30 years; Beta Club inducts local junior high students; ASUM names Lorenz as a legislative intern; Oran native named for Who's Who; Applications available for criminal justice scholarship

Area student studying in Germany for a year

Dustin Glastetter of Cape Girardeau is spending an academic year at Lausitzer Sportschule in Cottbus, Germany, as an exchange student. He received a scholarship from the American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS). Glastetter lives with a host family to help him learn German language and culture. Dustin is a 2005 graduate of Central High School in Cape Girardeau and a student at Southeast Missouri State University. He is the son of David S. and Denise C. Glastetter of Cape Girardeau.

Jenkins graduates with honors from Collins

Melissa Jenkins graduated with honors from Collins College in Phoenix, Az. She graduated with an Associates of Arts degree and a 3.89 PA. She is the daughter of Violet and Gary Dietiker of Cape Girardeau.

Student lobby association celebrates 30 years

The Associated Students of the University of Missouri (ASUM) celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. For 29 of those years, ASUM has placed 225 UM students in legislative internships at the state level. ASUM is the UM student voice in government, and as well as educating university students about legislative issues and governmental involvement, the association lobbies at the state capitol on behalf of UM students and higher education issues. ASUM legislative interns are registered lobbyists.

Beta Club inducts local junior high students

Twenty-two Junior High school students from Cape Christian School were recently inducted into the National Junior Beta Club. They are:

Eighth grade: Meg Goodman, president; Mollie Young, secretary; Breana Elliott, chaplain, Steven Bell, Megan Keesee and Sarah Schenimann.

Seventh grade: Paige Kiefner, vice-president; Hillary Caldwell, Danny Comeau, Kristopher Cook, Christopher Dedert, Lauren Goehring, Trace Janota, Spencer Lovig, Thomas McElmurrt, Jon Morrow, Victoria Parry and Asia Thomas.

Sixth grade: Clayton Carver, Barry DeCoursey, Dustin Peetz, Hunter Shantz and Josh Staples.

To be eligible for Junior Beta Club, students must have at least a 3.6 grade-point average on a 4- point scale and display good character and leadership qualities. Students must also volunteer a minimum of three hours toward service projects. The club is co-sponsored by parent volunteer Joan Goehring and teacher Julie Bell.

ASUM names Lorenz as a legislative intern

Jonathan Lorenz of Southeast Missouri was chosen to be a legislative intern on the Associated Students of the University of Missouri (ASUM) University of Missouri-Columbia. He attended intern training Oct. 7 and 8, and met Representatives Judy Baker (D-25), his mentor, and Ed Robb (R-24). He will attend training through January training as well. Lorenz is a junior journalism major. His family lives in the Cape Girardeau and Jackson area. Lorenz also serves on the Board of Elections Commission and as chairman of Student Affairs Committee on the Missouri Students Association. He was active in residence-hall congress and government, has served on the board of directors for ASUM, and is currently secretary of the MU Paintball Club.

Oran native named for Who's Who

Matthew R. Bucher of Lambuth University in Jackson, Tenn., is one of 24 Lambuth students to be named Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. He was recommended by a committee of Lambuth faculty and students as a student who has excelled in scholarship, leadership, academic and extracurricular activities. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred E. Bucher of Oran, Mo.

Applications available for criminal justice scholarship

The $500 John Dennis Scholarship awarded by the Missouri Sheriff's Association will be presented to 16 college-bound Missouri high school seniors who intend to pursue a career in criminal justice and will be attending a Missouri College or University. Applicants must be in good standing with their school, have references from the school counselor, demonstrate financial need, have a 2.0 GPA or higher and be active in extracurricular activities. Applicants must include a paragraph detailing their goal 10 years after high school graduation. Contact the Missouri Sheriff's Association at 229 Madison St., Jefferson City, Mo. 65101 for an application. The deadline for applications is Jan. 31.

Cape Girardeau native graduates from Savannah college

Lindsey Marie Davis of Cape Girardeau graduated with a bachelor of Fine Arts from Savannah College of Art and Design.
