A Sunday evening motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Mount Auburn Road and Themis Street resulted in one fatality.

Three teen motorists were traveling northbound on Mount Auburn Road when the vehicle left the roadway, overturned and struck trees near the roadway. Two of the three were partially ejected; one of them, a 19-year-old man, died as a result of injuries, according to Sgt. Barry Hovis, police spokesman.

The Cape Girardeau Fire Department received a 911 call to the scene at 6:27 p.m. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered the overturned vehicle, resting on the driver's side, on the lawn of a duplex.

The three occupants had to be extricated from the vehicle, which took time due to the seriousness of the accident, Hovis said.

Medical personnel transported the motorists to the emergency room at Saint Francis Medical Center.

The other occupants have injuries ranging from serious to very serious, Hovis said.

More information is expected to be released by the Cape Girardeau Police Department later today.
