In times of need

The desire to help others is never more apparent than when others -- sometimes complete strangers -- are thrust into dire need.

Take the Jerry Toops family of Lesterville, Mo. When the Toops home was obliterated by tons of water from last month's Taum Sauk reservoir failure, the Lesterville community rallied to give aid and comfort to the family, whose three children had to be hospitalized.

Just like Southeast Missourians responded when New Orleans residents, affected by hurricanes, sought assistance, Lesterville residents quickly organized a response to the Toops family's needs.

And think of all the special events -- dinners, dances, auctions -- that are held to raise money when families lose their homes as the result of fires or lose loved ones because of tragic accidents. In these instances, the best of our human spirit rises above whatever calamity has befallen us, and we strive to make life better for those on the verge of losing all hope.

There is considerable pride to be taken in the fact that generosity is considered a way of life in these parts. We all wish no one ever had to withstand the impact of tragedy. Because of life's unpredictable course, however, we all benefit both when we provide aid and assistance and when we are on the receiving end of the generosity of our friends and neighbors.

By helping others, we learn the value of good deeds and warm hearts.
