The Central boys swimming team kicked off three days of swimming meets on the road with a 128-57 loss to Lafayette on Wednesday in Wildwood, Mo.

The Tigers had two individual winners -- diver Tanner Rust and 500-yard freestyle swimmer Kris Metje.

Rust, who had been closing in on the state qualifying cut, took a step back Wednesday but posted a winning mark of 170.03.

"It wasn't his best day," Central coach Dayna Powell said. "We don't know how he ended up winning the meet. We hope Friday at Kirkwood he can make the state cut."

Rust has been as close as 3 1/2 points to the cut mark of 215 on a degree of difficulty of 12.0.

Metje won the 500 in 5 minutes, 11.44 seconds. He also was part of two top-three relay teams and finished second in the 200 individual medley.

The Tigers (1-2) swim at Poplar Bluff today and at Kirkwood on Friday.
