A fire at a Cape Girardeau home Sunday caused about $50,000 in damage, but no one was hurt.

Firefighters responded to 2534 Lynwood Drive around 8:03 p.m. Sunday to find smoke coming from the home's attic area, according to a release from the Cape Girardeau Fire Department.

The blaze burned a 10-foot hole in the floor on the first level, and the fire extended up the walls.

The basement and center area of the first floor sustained heavy fire damage, and the rest of the home suffered heavy heat and smoke damage, the release stated.

The fire began in the basement and is believed to have been caused by electrical wires that shorted out, the release stated.

No one was home at the time of the fire.
