To the editor: As an American Muslim frustrated with the flurry of fiery responses from Islamic extremists concerning caricatures of Muhammad, it is refreshing to see the constructive steps taken by the Islamic Center in Cape Girardeau ("Muslim followers say Islam is against terrorism"). These Muslims understand that only through avenues of patience and tolerance can the world witness the true teachings of Islam...

As an American Muslim frustrated with the flurry of fiery responses from Islamic extremists concerning caricatures of Muhammad, it is refreshing to see the constructive steps taken by the Islamic Center in Cape Girardeau ("Muslim followers say Islam is against terrorism"). These Muslims understand that only through avenues of patience and tolerance can the world witness the true teachings of Islam.

On this same note, it is important for Muslims to objectively analyze the freedoms of the West. As Danish flags burn bright, the candle which lights the bridge between Islam and the West flickers. Illuminating the ideals of the past can restore its brightness: the freedoms outlined by the Founding Fathers and the peaceful proclamations of Muhammad. Through the understanding of an enlightened past, Americans can hope to avoid a dark era of relations with the Muslim world.
