25 years ago: March 11, 1981

After months of investigation, the Public Administration Service, the firm authorized by the city to look into the Cape Girardeau Police Department, has forwarded to Mayor Paul W. Stehr a preliminary report of its findings; a final report, which should be received by the end of the week, will be made public.

The St. Louis Court of Appeals has upheld a 1979 ruling by Circuit Judge A.J. Seier that the city of Cape Girardeau didn't negotiate in good faith to secure permanent easements from five property owners along an improved section of Cape Rock Drive; the city had contended it had negotiated in good faith with property owners and had made reasonable compensation offers to them for property needed for the improvement.

50 years ago: March 11, 1956

At the Church of the Nazarene in Cape Girardeau, a number of babies are dedicated in special services in the morning and evening; pastor of the church is the Rev. J. Paul Tucker.

Ground is broken for additions to Trinity Lutheran School on Pacific Street, the total cost of which will be around a quarter of a million dollars; the new additions will provide nine new classrooms, plus space for a bowling alley and assembly room, while freeing space for office use, a cafeteria and Sunday School rooms.

75 years ago: March 11, 1931

Falling into an unused cistern near her home, Jean O. Kimbel, 3-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Kimbel, 805 N. Main St., Cape Girardeau, was drowned yesterday; her body was found in the cistern at 6:45 p.m., by her grandfather at the end of a search which was organized when the child was missed.

Elizabeth Bealer, national director of the Covered Wagon Region of the Girl Scout organization, arrives in Cape Girardeau to inspect the troops of this district; Friday evening a covered dish dinner will be held, and Girl Scouts from the entire section and their parents will be guests; Bealer will present the Cape Girardeau troop with its charter at that time.

100 years ago: March 11, 1906

Special services for men are held at the Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau; the Rev. E.T. Adams, pastor of the church, preaches on "Associations in the Formation of Character."

Al Brinkopf has withdrawn from the undertaking firm of Hoch & Brinkopf; he has purchased a large stock of undertaking goods and is located at the old Rueseler stand on Broadway in Cape Girardeau.
