Central blanks Chaffee to open baseball season

The Central baseball team opened its season Wednesday afternoon with an 8-0 shutout of visiting Chaffee.

Chaffee, also playing its opener, was supposed to host the contest, but the Red Devils' field was not playable.

Chaffee's Chris Hanback led off the bottom of the first inning with a single, but the Red Devils did not have a baserunner the rest of the way.

Central junior right-hander Brad LaBruyere allowed one hit in five innings. He struck out 11. Junior left-hander Justin Myers worked two perfect innings.

The Tigers had 11 hits, led by Ty Craft with two, including a double. Eric Ennis also doubled, while Tyler Bruce and Lance Young both drove in two runs.

Central scored twice in the third inning, added three in the fifth and rounded out the scoring with three in the seventh.

Central hosts Kennett today, then visits Poplar Bluff on Saturday.

Sikeston 8, Kelly 3

Kelly led Sikeston 3-1 after three innings, but the visiting Bulldogs exploded for seven runs in the top of the fourth to claim the season-opening contest for both teams.

Central's Blake Driskell shot a 1-under 34 to lead the Tigers to victory in a three-team meet at Kimbeland Country Club in Jackson.

Driskell claimed the medalist honor, while Central's Kirk Lohmann shot a 40 and Robert Kaverman fired a 41.

Newcomer T.J. Smith led Jackson with a 38, and Brett Slaten and Brandon Holzum both shot a 44 for Notre Dame.

TRACK AND FIELD Chaffee Open

Chaffee swept its own meet in the season-opening competition for three squads.

The Bell City girls program made its debut in the meet.

For the Chaffee boys, Walker Rice, Gage Harrell and Geoff Mirly each had two first-place finishes each.

Rice won the shot put and discus events, Harrell topped the field in both the 400-meter run and 110 hurdles, and Mirly won long jump and triple jump.
