Local students earn music awards

More than 400 music students from Cape Girardeau, Jackson, Scott City and Dexter, Mo., participated in the 13th annual National Federation of Music Clubs Junior Festival on Feb. 25 at Southeast Missouri State University.

Area students earning their first Gold Cup awards included Madison Baumgart, Amy Blattel, Taylor Bock, Shannon Brennan, Amanda Buttry, Barry DeCoursey, Zachariah Dumey, Anna Essner, Nathan Fridley, Lindsey Grojean, Tara Grojean, Lisa Henderson, Chloe Kasten, Kiefer Mecham, Lydia Meece, Landon Petzold, Carly Schneider, Bailey Schnurbusch, Kailyn Schutte, Lindsey Soch, Bridget Trepasso, Leann Tripp and Ryan Welker.

Area students earning their second Gold Cup awards included Elizabeth Buchheit, Jonathan Deneke, Heather Hileman, Rachel Job, Bethany Miget, Kami Miinch, Mallory Milam, Laura Quigley, Brooke Rhymer, Ashley Taylor and Rachel Williamson.

Students earning their third Gold Cup awards included Andrew Buttry, Bailey Duncan, Andrea Penzel, Charlotte Schaffner, Nikole Tuschhoff, Kara Wilson and Jonathan Young.

Area students earn college scholarships

  • Chelsea Criddle of Cape Girardeau, daughter of Brian and Laura Criddle, has been awarded a Governor's Scholarship to attend Southeast Missouri State University.

* Josh Puckett of Oran, Mo., Laura Burdick and Karen Broemmelsick, both of Cape Girardeau, and Cole Cramer and Shay Priester, both of Jackson, have received Regents' scholarships to attend Southeast Missouri State University.

Broemmelsick and Priester also received Missouri Assessment Program scholarships.

Puckett, a senior at Oran High School, is the son of Gary and Mary Puckett of Oran.

Burdick, a senior at Cape Girardeau Central High School, is the daughter of Brad and Anna Burdick of Cape Girardeau.

Broemmelsick, a senior at Cape Girardeau Central High School, is the daughter of Warren and Nancy Broemmelsick of Cape Girardeau.

Cramer, a senior at Notre Dame Regional High School, is the son of Tom and Denise Cramer of Jackson.

Priester, a senior at Jackson High School, is the daughter of Kevin and Dominique Priester of Jackson.

* Danielle Gross of Cape Girardeau, Rebecca Wheetley of Scott City and Kendra Medlin of Kelso, Mo., have received President's scholarships to attend Southeast Missouri State University.

All three also received Missouri Assessment Program scholarships. Gross and Wheetley also received Missouri Leadership awards.

Gross, a senior at Cape Girardeau Central High School, is the daughter of David and Robyn Gross of Cape Girardeau.

Wheetley, a senior at Scott City High School, is the daughter of Lyn and James Fortner of Scott City.

Medlin, a senior at Scott City High School, is the daughter of Leeman Medlin Jr. of Kelso and Sherry Nolan of Scott City.

Area students earn college scholarships

  • Lorean Terbrak of Jackson has been awarded a Missouri Leadership Award and a Missouri Assessment Program Scholarship to attend Southeast Missouri State University.

Terbrak is a senior at Jackson High School. She is the daughter of Amy and Billy Upchurch of Jackson.

* Jennifer Snelson of Cape Girardeau and Paul Davis of Oran, Mo., have received President's Plus scholarships to attend Southeast Missouri State University.

Davis also received a Missouri Assessment Program Scholarship.

Snelson is the daughter of Randy and Roxanne Hargis of Bethel, Mo.

Davis, a senior at Scott County Central High School, is the son of Rodney and Debra Davis of Oran.

Saxony students win art contest

Saxony Lutheran High School students Deanna Dippold, Krista Heise, and Clay Obergoenner won first, second, and third place, respectively in a patriotic art contest sponsored by VFW Post 3838 Ladies Auxiliary.

Sutherlin lands academic top 100 spot

Kyle Sutherlin, a senior at Jackson High School, has been selected as one of the top 100 academic students in the Class of 2006 by the Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals. He is the son of Dirk and Amy Sutherlin of Jackson.

Christensen receives writing award

Immaculate Conception School fifth grader Kylie Christensen received honorable mention in the fifth grade division of the Southeast Missouri State University Writing Achievement awards.

Her poem, "The Beauty of God," was read aloud at an awards ceremony on April 8 at Southeast Missouri State University.

Awards given to area students in math contest

Eight Immaculate Conception seventh- and eighth-graders participated in the Missouri Council of Teachers of Mathematics competition in Cape Girardeau on April 1. The Immaculate Conception team of seventh-graders Brianna Ziegler and Madison Blankenship, and eighth-graders Jessica Triller and Nicole Banda qualified for state competition. The state competition will be held on April 29 in Columbia, Mo. Hannah Nenninger placed ninth in eighth-grade algebra. Fourth-graders Brock Hammers and Miranda Craft also competed in the local competition. Hammers placed fifth in concepts and ninth in problem solving. Craft placed ninth in concepts.

Palmer receives national scholar recognition

Notre Dame Regional High School student Blake Palmer of Jackson has been recognized for superior academic achievement by the National Society of High School Scholars.

Kraemer distinguished alumni

Dr. John Kraemer, assistant professor of the environmental science program at Southeast Missouri State University, has been named recipient of the 2005-2006 Distinguished Alumni Award by Indiana State University's College of Health and Human Performance.
