Ed Shaughnessy, drummer for the studio band on the Johnny Carson Show for the past 18 years, conducts a drum clinic for students attending the Central High School Jazz Festival; in the evening, he performs with the Central jazz band and a band of area professional musicians during a two-part concert at the school.

The U.S. Postal Service is seeking a site in Jackson for a new post office facility; the service is looking for a site upon which to build, or a site that already has a building which could be adapted for postal use.

50 years ago: May 2, 1956

Dr. Mark F. Scully, superintendent of schools at Dearborn, Mich., is named by the board of regents to become the tenth president of Southeast Missouri State College, the school from which he received his bachelor's degree in education in 1935.

Shooting matches, long a Cape Girardeau County sport indulged in by many, are to go the way of automobile raffles, bingo and other forms of lotteries countenanced for 75 years, but never legal; Prosecuting Attorney Stephen Limbaugh says he and Sheriff Alvin Klaus believe shooting matches fall into the same category as other contest for prizes, and are, therefore, prohibited.

75 years ago: May 2, 1931

Rush Limbaugh, state representative of Cape Girardeau County, has been assigned the task of preparing the brief which will be used in the impeachment trial of State Treasurer Larry Brunk.

Bamby Twist is the newest wrinkle in the bread industry; Max Wielpuetz has installed a "twisting" machine at his bakery at 525 Good Hope, which gives each loaf a crisp, rigid crust and a "twist" that is visible all around the exterior; the new loaf weighs 20 ounces and retails on the local market for 10 cents.

100 years ago: May 2, 1906

L.J. "Leroy" Jones, has opened up a grocery store in a nice new building at the corner of Henderson and William streets; Jones has for four years been one of the prominent builders and cabinet makers in Cape Girardeau; he and his family will live in the flat above the store.

Pape Bros. have been awarded the contract for constructing the three-story building for Meyer Bros., butchers, on Broadway; it will contain two store rooms, and the second and third floors will be made into flats.
