Kern, Elfrink place first in horseshoes opener

Rose Kern and Tyler Elfrink teamed up for a first-place finish in the Southeast Missouri Horseshoes Association's season-opening tournament Sunday.

The event took place at the American Legion in Benton, Mo., and attracted 17 teams.

Finishing second was the team of Larry Glastetter and Charlie Urhahn. Mike Mosse and Martin Williams placed third.

The association's next event is 1 p.m. Sunday at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Leopold, Mo.

Burnett claims honors in Chip A Ways action

Cissy Burnett was the medalist Tuesday in the Chip A Ways ladies golf action at Cape Jaycee Municipal Golf Course.

Deanna Peterman was the B flight winner.

Joellen Haas won the play of the day, which was closest to the hole on No. 12.

Dottie Gill had the low putts.

Show-Me State Games deadlines approach

The 22nd annual Show-Me State Games will includ some new sports: lacrosse, dodgeball, children's fishing, fly-rod casting, dog agility, cheerleading and youth tackle football. These sports join a list of 35 others offered in the Show-Me State Games.

The deadlines for competing are approaching: the soccer deadline is June 1; basketball and baseball have a deadline of June 22; and other sports have a deadline of July 1.

The GAMES will be July 21 through 23, July 28 through 30, and August 4 through 6 in Columbia, Mo. Ice hockey will be played in Springfield, Mo.; and paintball will take place in Springfield and Columbia.

The games are an Olympic-style sports festival where participants of all ages may compete, with gold, silver and bronze medals awarded to the top finishers in each event.
