The inaugural JnP Sports skateboarding competition received an impressive turnout Saturday morning at the skatepark in Jackson City Park.

More than 150 parents and young spectators showed up to watch a field of more than 30 skateboarders compete in the event, which featured a 14-and-under division and a 15-and-over division.

Brandon Clodfelter, 14, of Jackson, won the young division title, and 20-year-old Shawn Seabaugh of Cape Girardeau topped the older class.

Johnny Carter, owner of JnP Sports in Cape, said sponsoring the event was the store's way of thanking the skaters and giving them a chance to compete locally.

"This is something JnP Sports did for the skaters," he said.

Carter added that he hoped the event would help change the stereotypical negative view of skaters.

"We thought it would be cool to give people a positive outlook on skating instead of all the negative feedback," he said during the contest. "It's been great, and hopefully everything will continue to go like it has been so far today. There's a lot of kids out here just watching. Everyone's acted in a mature matter, which has made the event even better."

Rounding out the top three in the 14-under division were Easton Schaub, 14, of Jackson, in second place and 13-year-old Seth Reeves of Cape in third.

Austin Urhahn, 15, of Jackson, was second in the older category, followed by 19-year-old Cape resident Tommy Jones.
