25 years ago: July 9, 1981

State Rep. Jerry Ford of Cape Girardeau and State Sen. John C. Dennis of Benton, Mo., say they will be present Saturday at Southeast Missouri State University during a rally protesting the veto of salary increases for state employees, but both say they won't participate in the march or protest itself; area legislators have been invited to the rally by state workers, initiated by Teamsters Union Local 574, which represents about 90 state employees in Cape Girardeau.

Despite some reports that federal funding for construction of a handicapped fishing pier and playground equipment at County Farm Park has been denied, County Court Presiding Judge Gene Huckstep says he hasn't received notice about the grant request.

50 years ago: July 9, 1956

The Cape Girardeau City Council, acting on petitions presented by a delegation from the Cape Girardeau Jaycees, orders an ordinance prepared calling a special election Aug. 7 to vote on bonds to build a new municipal swimming pool.

A resolution is adopted by the Cape Girardeau school board approving the sale of $425,000 in school district bonds; it is also reported at the meeting that the Haas house on the high school grounds is being razed by the Burton Gerhardt Construction Co.

75 years ago: July 9, 1931

Cape Girardeau on Saturday will get its first real test of not receiving its usual Saturday afternoon city mail delivery; the new regulation, omitting Saturday afternoon delivery, became effective last week, but it wasn't noticed because the first Saturday fell on the Fourth of July holiday.

Work is rapidly progressing on the remodeling of an extension roof over the entrance to the warehouse of the Meyer-Albert Grocer Co., 208 N. Main St.; C.J. Reisenbichler is the contractor, with Herman Pape doing the work.

100 years ago: July 9, 1906

Ed Jones, 35, a fireman at the power and light plant in the north end of Cape Girardeau, is fearfully scalded in the evening as he is engaged in washing out the boiler tubes; steam scalds him all over the right side, his arm and leg.

Hyman Caldwell, senior member of the firm of Caldwell Bros., clothiers and dry goodsmen, departs for New York City, N.Y., where he has taken a job as manager of a large department store.
