Darla Mangels pitched a one-hit shutout Monday as Jackson beat visiting Chaffee 3-0 in the softball opener for both schools. Mangels struck out five and walked one. Darla Mangels pitched a one-hit shutout Monday as Jackson beat visiting Chaffee 3-0 in the softball opener for both schools.

Mangels struck out five and walked one. The only hit she allowed was a third-inning single by Rachel Hendrix.

"Darla pitched great and we had good defense behind her," said Jackson first-year coach Amanda Forester. "It was a good way to start the season."

Jackson had five hits against losing pitcher Sarah Benton. Lyndsay McNeely went 2-for-3.

The Indians scored all three of their runs in the first inning.

Both teams are right back in action today. Jackson visits Hillsboro and Chaffee hosts Kelly.

Kelsy Holloway and Amanda Nichols combined for a two-hitter as Central opened its season with a road victory.

Holloway, who got the win, allowed two hits over the first three innings, while Nichols pitched four innings of hitless relief. Holloway struck out three and walked one, while Nichols fanned nine batters and walked two.

Sirena Watkins, who went 2-for-4, broke open a scoreless game with a two-run triple in the second inning. Nichols went 2-for-3, as the Tigers had seven hits overall.

Kelly pounded out 21 hits and romped on the road in its season opener. The game was stopped after four innings by the mercy rule.

Casey Kern went 4-for-4, including a triple and two doubles. She also drove in three runs.

Ashley Flayhardy had three hits, including two doubles, and two RBIs. Ashley Vetter also doubled twice and delivered four RBIs, while Sarah Ruff had two hits and four RBIs.

Summer Procter, Katee Moore, Kalie Hughes and Ashley Beggs all added two hits for the Hawks.

Hughes and Kern combined on a one-hitter. Hughes, the starter and winner, pitched two perfect innings, striking out four. Kern allowed a hit and an unearned run in two innings.

"My girls really hit the ball," Kelly coach Rhonda Ratledge said.

The Hawks visit Chaffee today.

Jackson opened its season with a road victory.

Sarah Detring, Erinne Haff, Maura Neader, Ellen Beil and Raechel Batz all posted singles wins for the Indians, while the doubles teams of Haff-Neader and Beil-Allison Keiper also prevailed.

The Indians' JV won 13-2.

Jackson visits Poplar Bluff today.
