High school football: Week 5

Clayton (1-3) at Jackson (3-1)

Last week's games: Jackson 49, Sikeston 0; MICDS 35, Clayton 7

* Last year: did not meet

* Notes: Jackson did not punt once -- nor pass once -- in a dominant performance against SEMO North foe Sikeston. The Indians spread the ball around with nine players in the rushing column, and senior Trae Smith led the way with three touchdowns. Jackson has scored 24 or more points in all four games. Clayton, a power in Class 4 in recent years, has relied on its passing game so far. Adam Banks has completed 26 of 58 passes for 472 yards, but has thrown five interceptions and just two touchdowns. Bo Lanter leads the Clayton rushing attack with 201 yards on 47 carries. Smith and Cody Randen have received the bulk of the carries this season for Jackson.

St. Charles West (1-3) at Central (1-3)

* Last week's games: Central 24, St. Charles 6; Timberland 22, St. Charles West 14

* Last year: St. Charles West 24, Central 14

* Notes: Central tightened its defense and got some big plays through the air and on special teams to get into the win column. Senior receiver Eric Ennis had a pair of touchdown catches, and sophomore George Hamilton returned a kickoff for a score. Running back Hykeem Hammonds rushed for more than 100 yards for the third straight game. St. Charles West blew a 14-0 lead against Timberland, surrendering two fourth-quarter scores in the loss. Among West's other losses was a 6-2 defeat against University City with a 96-yard fumble recovery accounting for the game's only score. Matthew Jones leads the Warriors with 269 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Daniel Hewitt and quarterback Brannon Champagne also are over 200 yards for the year.

Chaffee (2-2) at Scott City (1-3)

* Last week's games: Chaffee 25, Rector (Ark.) 3; Fredericktown 27, Scott City 14

* Last year: Scott City 14, Chaffee 0

* Notes: Scott City has won the previous 20 meetings between the two teams, but enters the game struggling after two straight losses. The Rams have had trouble stopping the running game, surrendering 150 yards to Fredericktown running back Ryan Sawyer last week after East Prairie's M.C. Williams surpassed 250 yards the previous week. Chaffee has matched its highest win total since 2001, and a third win would match its highest win total since a six-win season in 1990.

Perryville (3-1) at Potosi (4-0)

* Last week's games: Perryville 20, Park Hills Central 12; Potosi 13, Herculaneum 6

* Last year: Potosi 40, Perryville 0

* Notes: The Pirates continue to show they are a much-improved squad, as they moved to 3-1 with a home win last week. Perryville will look for some revenge, as Potosi mauled Perryville 40-0 last year in the Pirates' homecoming game. The Trojans bring a prolific passing attack into the game, with Jordan Politte throwing for 652 yards and 10 touchdowns through three games. Perryville's main weapon has been running back Kris Cottner, who has scampered for more than 100 yards in all three wins.

St. Pius (0-4) at St. Vincent (1-3)

* Last week's games: Maplewood 25, St. Vincent 15; John Burroughs 49, St. Pius 0

* Last year: St. Vincent 28, St. Pius 13

* Notes: St. Vincent will try to get back into the win column against struggling MAFC Blue Division foe St. Pius. The game pits a pair of struggling offenses, with the two teams combining to average eight points a game. St. Pius has been shut out each of the past two weeks by a combined 77-0, and has scored less than six points a game. St. Vincent's 15 points against Maplewood was a season-high.
