West Plains joins field for Notre Dame Inv.

~ The Class 3 runner-up makes a late entry into Saturday's meet.

Weather conditions prohibited Notre Dame's boys cross country team from facing some of its chief Class 3 competition -- mainly defending state champion Potosi and Ste. Genevieve -- at the Hancock Invitational last weekend, but the Bulldogs will get a look at a Class 3 favorite when it hosts the Notre Dame Invitational on Saturday.

The postponement of the Hancock Invitational from Saturday to Monday forced Notre Dame to drop out, but the weather problems also affected the schedule of cross country powerhouse West Plains. With an open date, West Plains will make the trip to Cape Girardeau.

Notre Dame will get some stiff competition from the Zizzers, a young squad which finished runner-up to Potosi last year.

With the addition of West Plains, Notre Dame coach Bill Davis expects a field of about 20 teams. Area squads Saxony Lutheran and Kelly are among the teams scheduled to be in the field. The meet will begin at 10:30 a.m.

The Bulldogs have won their past two races, including the Farmington Invitational on Tuesday.

West Plains should be considered the favorite in the girls race, led by defending Class 3 state champion Brittani Johnson.

HOF coaches clinic

Some of the area's most successful, and respected basketball coaches will gather at Scott County Central High School in October for the first annual Scott County Central Hall of Fame Coaching Clinic.

The event will take place Oct. 28, and will be followed by a trio of exhibition games.

Former Vashon coach Floyd Irons will be the featured speaker. Other speakers at the clinic include Lennies McFerren, Ronnie Cookson, Jim Bidewell, Mitch Wilkins and Paul Hale.

Following the clinic a pair of alumni games and a coaches vs. coaches game will be played. Alumni matchups include New Madrid County Central against Portageville and Scott County Central against Charleston.

Jackson alumni game

Jackson will host its first alumni boys soccer game Oct. 14 following a home varsity contest against Northwest.

The game is open to anybody who has played for the Indians since the program began in 1987. It is expected to begin around 2 p.m.

Plans are in the works for a girls alumni game in the spring.
