25 years ago: Nov. 1, 1981

Rose Theatre was officially rededicated Friday as the Forrest H. Rose Theatre as part of the Southeast Missouri State University Homecoming celebration; the theater is named for the first head of the university speech department and former dean of the college, who died in 1969.

An explosion and fire at the Procter & Gamble Paper Products Co. plant north of Cape Girardeau causes slight damage and minor injuries to three employees; the explosion originates in the plant's heating and ventilation system and is fueled by dust.

50 years ago: Nov. 1, 1956

Four district Boy Scouts will attend the British Jubilee Jamboree held in Sutton Park, Sutton Goldfield in Warwickshire County, England; participating in the event will be John L. Oliver Jr. and Carl Ritter, both of Cape Girardeau, Charles B. Brown of Kennett, Mo., and Glenn Ault Jr. of Charleston, Mo.

The Kellogg Medal for Civic Achievement was presented recently to the Cape Girardeau Council of Garden Clubs in recognition of its work in establishing and maintaining the Capaha Park rose test garden.

75 years ago: Nov. 1, 1931

Formal reopening of Christ Episcopal Church, which has undergone extensive remodeling during the early fall, is held, beginning with the morning Holy Communion service; the Rt. Rev. William Scarlett of St. Louis, bishop of the Missouri diocese of the church, is guest speaker; among improvements made to the church were the installation of new floors and sills, pews, beams, lighting fixtures, kneeling benches, choir stalls and pew screens.

The Rev. V.A. Moore, now pastor of three small churches in the Cape Girardeau Baptist Association, has been called as pastor of a fourth, at Burfordville; he is also pastor of churches at Whitewater, Millersville and Allenville.

100 years ago: Nov. 1, 1906

Officers of the Roberts, Johnson & Rand Shoe Co. are scheduled to arrive in Cape Girardeau within the next few days to consult with the committee appointed by Commercial Club president M.E. Leming to work up a proposition to locate a factory of the St. Louis company here.

The Southeast Missouri Trust Co. opens its doors to the public in the morning, marking the beginning, perhaps, of a new industrial activity in Southeast Missouri.
