Crass commercialism MATT SANDERS doesn't like to pay to go big commercial rock bands because, I guess, he thinks it's uncool. I admire that. However, Sanders seemed to pledge to lower himself to uncoolness if the Show Me Center would book some big commercial rock bands. It bothers me that Sanders would indulge in such a betrayal of his commitment to coolness for crass commercialism...

Mailing to the troops

REMEMBER THAT Christmas packages being sent to our servicemen and women overseas should be in the mail by Thanksgiving or the week after. Be sure to put their address in the return section so if it gets rerouted they'll still wind up with their package. If you don't know who to send something to, call the National Guard Armory and ask for information. Servicemen and women in the area could help organize a shipment so the many troops who have had their deployment extended will know that all Americans remember them not just at the holidays, but all year long.

Honorable service

OUR FAMILY has two honor students who served in the Army and have seen active duty in both Iraq and Afghanistan. They knew of the hazards they'd face. That doesn't mean we shouldn't honor them and every other soldier who did or didn't get a college degree. If they weren't fit and capable, the military services wouldn't accept them. Insult them, and you insult the entire United States.

Understanding Kerry

EVERYBODY COMPLAINS about the comment made by John Kerry, but those of us who served in Vietnam understand what he was talking about. It's no secret that a lot of the people who were there were dropouts or people who went to court and were given a choice to enlist or go to jail. The draft hit the black community.

Losing oversight

THE HEIGHT of arrogance is when you do something wrong or unjust and expect no one will notice. The government agency that audits the rebuilding effort in Iraq is being shut down. It has shown overbilling, incompetence and outright lying by the companies over there. Many had no-bid contracts and are heavy supporters of this administration.

School discipline

DID CAPE Girardeau school administrators impose discipline over the "funny" school-shooting plan, like the prosecutor suggested? If they didn't, then children's blood will be on their hands in the future.

That's not funny.

I Smell a Rat

I agree with Sanders,

First name Matt.

I want to know

Where Borat's at.

Feeding the monster

WHEN YOU create a monster (government schools), you either feed it (money) or you kill it. It's that simple. Every day the government school operates is another day the taxpayers feed it.

The producers

IF MATT Sanders thinks it is easy to produce a concert, he should do it himself. Here is how. Contact the act's manager/agency to determine availability/interest in performing; negotiate the contract price, terms and rider; rent the venue; and contract for sound, stage, lighting and insurance. Then he can hope to sell enough tickets and coordinate people for security, parking, ushers and concessions. The day after the show he loses money on it because he didn't sell enough tickets, and he then reads the newspaper's unappreciative review written by a biased critic with an agenda. Good luck, Matt. We look forward to the show.
