50 years ago: Nov. 15, 1956

BENTON, Mo. -- Alden Pinney, 69, church and community leader of Benton and former owner and publisher of the Scott County Democrat of Benton, dies at a hospital in Cape Girardeau; he is survived by his wife, the former Lorena Norrid, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James P. Norrid, pioneer residents of Scott County.

A wind-lashed rain during the noon hour floods Cape Girardeau streets and causes some traffic problems as it heralds the approach of a cold front that is expected to drop the temperature into the low 30s overnight.

75 years ago: Nov. 15, 1931

"Happy Valley," a four-act comedy drama, is presented at St. Mary's Hall by the Franklin Dramatic Club, coached by the Rev. Leonard Steinmeyer; among those in the cast are Josephine Barranco, Max Koeck, Vernon Nenninger, Robert Cook, Germaine LeGrand, Joe Reiker, Mary Bradford and Mary Margaret Davis.

The Rev. C.E. Benlehr of Dmoh, India, a missionary of wide experience in foreign Christian work, speaks in the morning at First Christian Church in Cape Girardeau; he has given about 25 years of his work to the foreign field.

100 years ago: Nov. 15, 1906

Ursula Murdoch of St. Louis arrived in Cape Girardeau last night; tomorrow, she will give a concert at the Opera House with the assistance of artists who are to arrive tonight; she has won a great reputation in St. Louis and other cities as a violinist.

What is said to be the finest butcher shop in this part of the country was completed yesterday by Meyer Brothers, owners of the large, new building on Upper Broadway, in which the shop is located; the fixtures were supplied by Brecht Butcher Supply House of St. Louis at a cost of $1,200, and N.P. Gouker of Decatur, Ill., an experienced installer, came here to put in the box and other things; the ice box is a marvel.
