Meadow Heights junior forward Tyler Wagner scored a game-high 37 points in an 80-77 shootout victory Tuesday at Leopold.

The Panthers led 37-34 at the half and were able to maintain the three-point advantage through the second half.

Both teams combined to shoot 64 free throws and committed 50 fouls.

Sam Russell added 14 points for Meadow Heights, and Thomas Mitchell had 11 points.

"We had nobody with any experience coming back," Meadow Heights coach Tom Brown said. "To come back and score 80 with all new guys, I like that."

Codey Van De Ven led the Wildcats with 19 points, Darren VanGennip had 18 points, Matt Stoverink had 11 points and Tyler Clubb had 10 points.

Meadow Heights will be back in action this weekend at the Current River Challenge in Van Buren. Leopold will next play at the Woodland Tournament on Monday.

The Scott City girls basketball team bounced back from Monday's opening night loss to hold off Woodland.

Kelley Hicks scored 13 points to lead the Rams (1-1) while Whitney Tapley added 10 and Nora Glasser scored nine.

The Cardinals (0-1) were led by Francee VanGennip's 18 points. Lauren Johnson and Cortney Glastetter each added 10 for Woodland, which rallied from a 17-point deficit after three periods.

  • Jackson and Notre Dame claimed semifinal victories Tuesday at the Central Girls Junior Varsity Tournament and will meet today in the finals.

The Indians beat Farminton 38-32, and Notre Dame routed Central 51-25. The finals are 7:15 tonight. Central and Farmington will play at 6 p.m. in the third-place game.

In the consolation bracket, Poplar Bluff beat Chaffee 44-15, and Dexter beat Sikeston 43-28. The consolation finals also are at 7:15 tonight.

  • Central's boys eighth-grade team beat visiting Charleston 39-38 in its season opener Tuesday. The Tigers were led by Zach Boerboom with 16 points. Central also won the "B" game 47-26.
