BENTON, Mo. -- Scott County Court President Judge Louis Hirschowitz last week became the second Southeast Missourian to be elected president of the Missouri Association of Counties; Cape Girardeau County Auditor H. Weldon Macke was the first.

Jon-Boy's Restaurant, Route K and Interstate 55 in Cape Girardeau, is now a unit of the Burger King group; Jim Drury, owner, has acquired the franchise for the new designation.

50 years ago: Nov. 22, 1956

The Annual Community Thanksgiving Service is held in the morning at First Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau, under the sponsorship of the Ministerial Alliance; the Rev. Arthur B. Gleeson, rector of Christ Episcopal Church, who has been here only a few months, delivers the sermon.

A bulldozing fullback named Dick Niedling has a ball, needling Poplar Bluff, Mo., offensively and defensively as his inspired play helps lead the Central High School Tigers to a 20-13 Turkey Day victory and a tie for third place in the Big Eight Conference; at Jackson, the Perryville (Mo.) Pirates blank the Indians 7-0.

75 years ago: Nov. 22, 1931

Today marks the close of the first year for the First Church of Fundamentals of Cape Girardeau, and the anniversary is celebrated in a special service; starting with 15 members, membership of the church has more than doubled.

Homage to the memory of those who fought for the South during the Civil War is paid in the afternoon, when a monument, given by the United Daughters of the Confederacy to the city of Cape Girardeau, is unveiled in the plaza on Morgan Oak Street.

100 years ago: Nov. 22, 1906

Contrary to the supposition of a great many people that the government had postponed its selection of a federal building site in Cape Girardeau, the Treasury Department has selected a site for the new building at the southeast corner of Broadway and Fountain; it is considered one of the best locations in the city.

A gentlemen visiting Cape Girardeau from Chaffee, Mo., reports a terrible condition of affairs down there; the heavy rains of the past week have caused such a volume of water in that swampy area that the ground won't absorb it.
