Self-defense

ANYONE WHO thinks a law against guns in Cape Girardeau would solve anything is naive. Gang members riding around town shooting at each other are already breaking a dozen laws. Would one more law change their mind? Of course not. Don't take guns out of the hands of law-abiding citizens who keep them for self-defense.

Legal to carry

CAPE GIRARDEAU cannot by law and the Constitution outlaw handguns. I can carry a concealed weapon with the proper permit by state law. I can also carry a gun in my vehicle as long I have the gun registered in my name without a concealed-carry permit. I always carry my gun when I go to Cape and St. Louis. I feel safer in St. Louis than I do in Cape, and that is the most dangerous city in the nation.

Teacher's time

IN RESPONSE to the parent upset about seeing her daughter's teacher pumping gas on his planning period: Please do not jump to conclusions until you are aware of the circumstances. Sometimes a teacher may run and errand on his planning period that is school related, such as purchasing materials for a school activity or a meeting at the central office. I would hate to think anyone would criticize just because a teacher stopped to get gas. If he was running an errand for a class activity, he is using his gas to do it and most likely his personal money to get the materials for the activity. Teachers are not out to cheat the system. They put a lot of their own personal time and money into the education of your child -- time and money the public is never aware of. Give them a break.

Crossed cultures

TERRIFIC. MEXICO and Iran are expanding their cultural heritage and tourism interactions. The millions of illegal-alien Mexicans in our nation already demonstrate how easy it is to cross our borders. Is anyone but a "we don't need no stinking fence" apologist singing "Don't worry, be happy"? Me neither.

Numbers don't match

THE SOCIAL Security Administration informs employers that hundreds of thousands employees' Social Security numbers don't match or are not valid numbers. Some employers get thousands of these notices but can still say with a straight face that they don't knowingly hire illegal aliens. More amazing, elected officials let them get away with that bald-faced lie.

Legal hunting

I DON'T remember reading anyplace where a non-hunting person has a right to demand anything from a hunter. If I choose to get my license for each hunting season, purchase my gun and ammo, use my vehicle and gas and go to property I either own or have been given permission to use, who can tell me what my reason for hunting is or that I should stop? My rights include the right to bear arms and use them for hunting as I can legally do.

Taking time

A PLANNING period in teacher lingo means nothing more than what the rest of us consider lunch hour. While your child is on his lunch break, his teacher is likely working in the cafeteria and hallways as disciplinarian. Each teacher gets a planning period sometime during the day to do the things that the rest of us do on our lunch hours.

Insufferable posturing

APPARENTLY IT is not yet obvious to the apparently completely isolated Southeast Missourian editorial staff that "legislative remedies" to illegal drug use don't work well. We already lock drug users up and throw away the key, This problem is not amenable to political action, though it does allow for a lot of insufferable political posturing.

No clue

RADIO AND TV talking heads have spent a lot of time lately unintentionally telling us that, when it comes to Iraq, they have no clue as to what to do.

Power trip

YEX, HUNTING is a power trip. We pay for licenses. We buy guns, ammunition, clothes, boots and hats. All of the money we spend on property, rental rights and equipment goes to supporting the economy. Take us out of this picture and see Bass Pro, Cabela's and many others like them close their doors and put thousands of people out of work. Apparently those who oppose hunting have never been in the quiet woods, enjoyed the hunt and the friendship of your hunting party or, most of all, developed a closeness to God and nature. We eat venison almost exclusively during the year, and it helps on our food bill. If you eat chicken, beef or pork, go to a slaughter house and watch what you eat being processed. Then speak out again.

Not history

TALK ABOUT political correctness. The article on Indian perspective of Thanksgiving was historical misinformation. The Pilgrims were God-fearing people who got along well with the Indians. It was not until later in the 17th century that trouble started in New England. Please read the historical sources like William Bradford himself before you put an article in the paper like this, which supports an unhistorical point of view.

Go into the world

TRUE CHRISTIANITY must fulfill the Great Commission, which says to go into the world and make disciples. True Christianity cannot hide itself in the corner of a church or home. It must be an influence on society, including making comments upon moral matters that affect its adherents.

Welfare abuse

IN RESPONSE to the story about the government saying a record four in 10 children born in U.S. in 2005 were out of wedlock: Our government needs to assess the real cause of this. Too many parents do not get married because the government allows unmarried mothers to use welfare programs. The other parent lives in the household but goes unnamed as the father and may have a substantial income. I see these circumstances on a daily basis.

No refreshing

RESPONDING TO the person who finds the mayor of Cape Girardeau "refreshing" because he shoots from the hip and doesn't bend to decorum: In the online dictionary,"Shooting from the hip" is defined as "to act or speak on a matter without forethought," and decorum is defined as "correct or appropriate behavior." Not bending to correct and appropriate behavior constitutes an arrogant bully. Cape Girardeau does not need this kind of leadership. Although the caller got the facts correct about this mayor, I do not find his behavior refreshing.
