Southeast Missouri State's Missy Whitney has been named the Ohio Valley Conference newcomer of the week for women's basketball.

Whitney, a 6-foot-2 junior forward, scored 24 points during the Redhawks' only game last week, a 101-78 win over Harris-Stowe. She also had eight rebounds and three assists.

Whitney, a Charleston High School graduate who earned junior college All-American honors at Three Rivers Community College in Poplar Bluff, leads the Redhawks in scoring with an average of 15.3 points per game. She is second in rebounding with nine per contest.

The Redhawks (2-2) play Saturday night in Waco, Texas, against Baylor, ranked 13th nationally. The Bears won the 2004-05 NCAA title.
