Jackson girls throw fast start at Dons

The Jackson girls basketball team started fast in its showdown with Doniphan, building a 17-point lead after one period en route to a 63-54 victory at home.

"We got a good jump, and we could have put them away," Jackson coach Sam Sides said. "We tried to go inside early and often. In the second half, we just couldn't finish and their defensive intensity picked up.

"We hung on and made our free throws in the end."

Jackson hit seven of 10 free throws in the final period, accounting for half of its scoring in the frame.

The Indians (7-3) picked up a combined 35 points from their post players. Five-foot-10 senior Amanda Peiffer led the way with 22 points, while 5-9 senior Gabrielle Garritano added 13. Kelci Keith and Jenni Tenholder each added nine.
