Area woman indicted on suspicion of mail theft

A Cape Girardeau woman accused of stealing mail from mailboxes on Christmas Eve has been indicted by the federal prosecutor charged with theft or receipt of stolen mail matter. Jesica A. Shaw, 33, of 2816 Themis St., Apt. E., is free on a $10,000 bond after a Wednesday court appearance in the Eastern District of Missouri federal court in Cape Girardeau. At that hearing, Shaw was also appointed an attorney by Magistrate Judge Lewis M. Blanton. Shaw is scheduled to appear for arraignment Tuesday. Cape Girardeau police arrested Shaw on Dec. 24 after a complaint from residents said Shaw was taking mail from mailboxes in the 2800 block of Whitener Street, according to a police statement. Shaw was initially charged with mail theft and driving while intoxicated. While Shaw is scheduled to appear in Cape Girardeau County circuit court Monday on the DWI charge, Cape Girardeau Prosecuting Attorney Morley Swingle said he dropped the mail theft charge in light of the federal charge.

Salvation Army marks reaching of 2006 goal

The Salvation Army held a celebration at West Park Mall to thank all the individuals and businesses who promoted bell ringing during the 2006 Christmas season. "The buckets and bells will be put away for 11 months," said Maj. Ben Stillwell. "It was a great season." Between the community and media coverage, Stillwell and his wife, Maj. Beth Stillwell, were impressed with the support they've received. The Salvation Army reached its Christmas goal of $260,000 through anonymous donors, mass mailings and $123,040.50 in kettle contributions. "The large figure is because of all the places they let us stand," Beth Stillwell said.
