Central's girls tennis team kept Jackson winless with a 7-2 victory in the Tigers' season opener Wednesday at Central.

Liz Lafoe, Erica Foley, Dani Gross, Merritt Gerlach and Michaelyn Burns all scored singles wins for the Tigers. The doubles teams of Lafoe-Gross and Burns-Paige Foley won for Central.

Jackson's lone win came from Sarah Hinkebein. No. 1 singles player Kelly Mitchell suffered her first loss. Mitchell and Hinkebein teamed up to win the No. 1 doubles for Jackson.

Central's JV won 10-2.

CROSS COUNTRY

Murphysboro Invitational

The Notre Dame boys and girls opened their cross country season with second-place finishes at the Murphysboro (Ill.) Invitational.

The boys finished with 63 points with six individuals in the top 20. Sam Montgomery completed the 3.1 mile course in fifth place at 17:29, followed by teammates Austin Critchlow in 11th (18:24), Josh Lester in 14th (18:39), Ryan Roggow in 16th (18:57), Matt Pfau in 17th (18:58) and Greg Kanneberg in 20th (19:18).

The girls finished behind McLeansboro with 68 points. Notre Dame's Casey Crawford finished second in 22:03, while Brooke Beussink was 10th (23:46) and Megan Rosenquist 13th (24:19).

VOLLEYBALL

Scott City 25-25 NMCC 21-21

Scott City survived 16 service errors to improve to 2-0 with a two-game win.

Kacie Cartwright led the Rams with six kills. She added seven digs and two service aces. Emily Miller had nine assists for Scott City and Ashton Phillips added three aces.

The Rams JV won 25-17, 25-21.

Perryville 25-25, Central 12-23

Central dropped to 0-2 with a two-game loss to visiting Perryville.

Chelsea Oliver led the Tigers in kills and Andrea Niswonger led in assists. Amanda Courtois recorded 10 assists for Perryville.

Central's JV beat Perryville 25-16, 25-22.
