Redhawks score 11 but surrender 13

~ Central Arkansas gained a split of the two-game series despite Southeast's third-best scoring effort.

The Southeast Missouri State baseball team scored in double figures for the third straight game Wednesday.

But the Redhawks' third-highest scoring performance of the season was not enough to extend their winning streak.

In a wild, back-and-forth affair, host Central Arkansas held on for a 13-11 victory and a split of the two-game series in Conway, Ark.

Southeast, which captured Tuesday's series opener 12-5, had a five-game winning streak snapped.

The Redhawks fell to 12-7, while the Bears -- a first-year Division I program -- evened their record at 10-10.

The contest featured 25 hits, including 14 for extra bases.

Southeast had five doubles, but UCA matched that while adding the game's lone triple and all three of the game's home runs.

Freshman Jim Klocke had three of Southeast's 11 hits. He also scored three runs.

Senior Asif Shah, senior Robby Moore and sophomore Matt Wulfers all added two hits for the Redhawks.

Shah drove in four runs, Wulfers had three RBIs and senior Dustin Pritchett added two RBIs without a hit.

Klocke, Shah, Wulfers, senior Daryl Graham and freshman Nick Harris all doubled for the Redhawks.

Harris scored three times.

Scott Cline paced the Bears with four hits and four RBIs. Chris Davis, Jonathan Ashworth and Graham Martin all homered for UCA.

With both teams relatively thin on front-line pitching for the mid-week game -- each squad has a conference series this weekend -- the contest figured to be high-scoring.

It turned out that way, as Southeast used six pitchers and UCA utilized five hurlers.

Southeast scored two runs in the top of the first inning and added three more in the second to lead 5-0.

UCA came back with five in the bottom of the second and the slugfest was on.

The Redhawks held two more leads, 6-5 and 7-6, but found themselves trailing 9-7 after four innings.

Southeast pulled into a 9-9 tie on Shah's two-run double in the fifth.

The Bears answered immediately with four in their half of the fifth to go ahead 13-9.

Things settled down a bit as there was no more scoring until Southeast had one final threat in the ninth.

After the first two batters were retired, Shah was hit by a pitch, Pritchett walked, and Wulfers delivered a two-run double to make it 13-11. But Graham flied out to end things.

Sophomore Daniel Schuh, Southeast's fourth hurler, took the loss.

He allowed three hits and was charged with three runs in just one-third of an inning.

Southeast begins Ohio Valley Conference play Saturday at home by kicking off a three-game series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Tennessee-Martin.

Sophomore Matt Wagner, who entered play Wednesday as Southeast's RBI leader, remains questionable for this weekend.

Wagner, the No. 4 hitter in Southeast's lineup, missed Wednesday's contest after suffering a leg injury during Tuesday's game while running out a triple.
