Wrong message

BEER DRINKING hecklers. Front-page news. What a great message to send our youths.

President's call

MILITARY INTELLIGENCE informs the president what's going on in the Middle East. If it doesn't inform the Congress, then the president should make the decision if we stay in Iraq or not.

Misdirected promo

AS A former commercial bank vendor for over 25 years, I follow our hometown banks with their marketing themes they present to the community. It is obvious they all want to attract deposit dollars to increase their bottom line to their stockholders. But times have changed. Today the No. 1 issue to consumers should be their safety when using online banking services. Identity theft and fraud is out there. Be aware anyone can be a victim, and consumers should know their financial institution's policy and protection plans. We are tired of seeing ad campaigns run by financial institutions which issue free baseball tickets for some type of deposit of some other type of service to be given away by the bank to the consumer. Bankers, redirect your advertising dollars and give your customers the piece of mind they deserve when they choose your bank. It is important.

Zoning issues

SCOTT CITY wants to grow? Do you really think rezoning property from light industrial to mobile homes will be the right direction? One or two individuals will make money. What is best for the city? If something was put there after it was zoned industrial, it should be moved or condemned. It's part of governing a city, not making friends.

Unstable area

IF WE pull our troops out of Iraq without setting up a stable government, that will be the most destabilizing thing we can do. The whole area over there will implode. There will mean chaos and security problems for the whole world.

Family situation

I GET so tired of self-righteous individuals labeling children because they come from single-parent families. I am a single parent whose child makes the A honor roll. I have a sister who's been married 20-plus years whose child has had tutoring and in high school doesn't make the honor roll. A lot of so-called stable two-parent families are not what they seem. Some children just care enough to get a good education no matter what the environment they are in. That includes children who's parents fight all the time in front of them.

After-school ideas

HERE'S AN idea for children from certain parts of town and what they need to be doing after school. Why don't these children go home and do their homework, read a book from the school library, jump rope, play with their siblings, ride a bike or go to the after-school tutoring program at school? Buses are provided for them to get home safely. These are a few things they could be doing.

Paying for exercise

UNIVERSITY EMPLOYEES have to buy a membership to go to the rec center to work out. What in the world are our tax dollars doing supplying exercise rooms for employees in the federal building?

Low support

THE HIGH Hill hecklers take everything good away from a great sport meant for families. I'd like to know the difference between heckling and bullying and what our kids are supposed to think. I believe heckling is a very low way to support anything.

Equitable draft

THE REASON I would like to see the military draft reinstated is because there would a equitable representation of the economic classes and social classes in the military.

Under oath

WITH THE integrity and honesty of the Republican Party, I can understand why the Democrats want to have Karl Rove and Harriet Meier testify under oath and with a transcript.

Heckler do good

I AM one of the co-founders of High Hill hecklers. I don't drink alcohol. What about the good things the High Hill hecklers do like clean up the park? We also collect cans for the artist society of Cape Girardeau. We also had a team member who died last year. We paid for his funeral. The High Hill hecklers do some good things in this town besides drink beer.

Sinful burden

I AM a Southeast Missouri State University student. I think it is sinful the way the university wants to raise our tuition to pay for the River Campus.

Do what's right

CHURCHES ARE filled with people who have some doubt about God's existence. They're not really sure he exists, but they go to church anyway in case they're wrong. We don't know if global warming is real, but the sake of our grandchildren shouldn't we try to do what's right in case we're wrong? Our government wastes so many billions of dollars. I don't see why we can't do something about this.
