WASHINGTON -- Despite political sniping from some congressional members, Peter C. Meyers of Matthews, Mo., became director of the Agriculture Department's Soil Conservation Service yesterday.

50 years ago: March 25, 1957

Third place in the annual National Guard state rifle match, held yesterday at Sedalia, Mo., was won by the team from Headquarters Company, 140th Infantry, of Cape Girardeau.

A request that suburban appendages of Cape Girardeau, needing but unable to get city services, be incorporated as a part of the municipality is broached to the city council; the issue is raised while discussing the new sanitary sewer line to be built along Kingshighway to the northwest city limits.

75 years ago: March 25, 1932

Orren Wilson, one of five Cape Girardeau mayoral candidates in the city primary, and one of three failing of nomination, says he expects to be a candidate for a place on the local school board.

Freddie Putz, one of the greatest athletes Jackson High School has ever turned out, is causing quite a stir in an independent basketball league in Denver, Colo.; in a recent game, Putz scored 14 points to lead his team to a 30-25 victory.

100 years ago: March 25, 1907

The trustees of the Christian Church dispose of property they purchased some time ago at Good Hope and Ellis streets in Cape Girardeau; August Bohnsack purchases the site for $1,050; the Christian congregation bought the lot with the intention of building a new church there.

Mrs. Mary Bohle, 73, dies at the home of her son, Herman Bohle, in Cape Girardeau; her husband, Henry Bohle, died a little over a year ago; he was a prosperous cooper.
