Capaha Scottish Rite Women's Club

The Capaha Scottish Rite Women's Club met Sept. 8 at the Country Kettle Restaurant in Biehle, Mo. There were 12 members present with husbands as guests.

Luella Armstrong presided over the meeting. Harold Corse was guest speaker.

The October meeting will be held at the Country Kettle with Armstrong as hostess and Evelyn Ritchie as program chairman.

Alpha Mu Master

Alpha Mu Master chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met Sept. 22 in the home of Joyce Hays. Marsha Parrish presided over a short business meeting.

Morley Swingle, Cape Girardeau County prosecuting attorney, was the guest speaker. He gave an accounting of the research needed to prepare and steps taken to locate a publisher for his novel, "The Gold of Cape Girardeau." He read 20,000 pages of Civil War history for his research, and he shared some of the Civil War history of battles fought in the Cape Girardeau area with the group.

St. Mary CWC

St. Mary Council of Catholic Women held a covered dish supper on Sept. 18 in the Monsignor Huels room of the parish office building at St. Mary Cathedral. Rosemary Oxley provided music on the dulcimer.

Judy Stricker, president, explained the organization of the Council of Catholic Women.

Lawana Wulfers, Church Women United representative, announced that 76 health kits were taken to the Awareness Luncheon on Sept. 26 at New McKendree United Methodist Church in Jackson.

The next meeting will be held Oct. 16 in the Monsignor Huels room.

American Legion Post 158

The Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Post 158 met Sept. 9 with Commander Virgil Whitener calling the meeting to order. Gary Kamp introduced the boys that the post sponsored to this year's Boys State, Adam Davis and Jacob Adams. The boys gave a summary of their experiences at Boys State and thanked the post for sending them.

Richard Aguilar gave the financial report. Motion made to accept the report was seconded and passed.

P.M. Kurre reported there are currently 578 members.

Harlan Siebert gave the trustee report. He praised Melvin Hoffman for helping put up the stage at Homecomers. He made a motion to allow the VFW to use the hall for its annual breakfast to be held from 6 to 10 a.m. on Nov. 8. The motion was seconded and passed.

Bill Poe reported on the clubroom and Homecomers. He did not have the final figures on Homecomers but indicated that it was one of the most successful events. He made the motion to hold the Homecomers event in 2004 uptown. Motion was seconded and passed. Bill Sullivan reported on the Homecomers hamburger stand and thanked members for all their help.

Leon Laurentius gave the house report and made a motion that the County Health Department be allowed to use the hall on Oct. 1. for giving flu shots. Motion was seconded and passed.

Jim Nelson reported on the Post Memorial Scholarship fund. Donations made were in memory of Paul Meyr from Harold and Betty Landgraf; in honor of Bob Goza by John Hoffmeister; in memory of Bob Abbott from Bob and Betty Goza, The Danzig Agency, Larry and Saundra Triplett, Albert Beussink, and Dennis and Doris Mason; in memory of Jim Litzelfelner from American Legion Post 158 Clubroom, Dr. Anthony Zoffuto, Gus and Doris Bollinger, Charles Sander, Don and Aletha Brown, Frank and Martha Wiley, John Yallaly, Gene Kinder and Sherma McCarty, Randy Fronabarger, Mr. and Mrs. Herb Morie, Norma J. Jones, Marjorie M. Wills, Dale and Edna Wolfenkoehler, Harold and Betty Landgraf, Bob and Adell Hartle, Andy and Jeannette Juden, and Jack and Judy Litzelfelner.

Charles Hutson reported on Americanism and made a motion to provide $450 for the music student of the month. The motion was seconded and passed. He also motioned that the post again be a corporate sponsor for the Veterans Home golf tournament to be held in June at $1,500. Motion was seconded and passed. He reminded members that the post in the past provided $100 for out-of-town bands that came for the Veterans Day parade. Motion was made to allow up to $300 for that purpose. The motion was seconded and passed.

Leonard Adams reported on the success of the dances. Siebert reported on basement cleanup. Some of the beds were given to Camp SEMO at Wappapello.

Whitener announced that he had received a request that a support event be allowed in the hall for the family of Grover Cleveland on Sept. 14. The motion was made, seconded and passed. Also a motion was made, seconded and passed to allow a youth soccer select team to use the hall for a fund raiser.

It was announced that the district meeting will be held here. Motion was made, seconded and passed to provide $300 for Vince Schwartz to take care of the meal.

Motion was made that the post contribute $1,500 to the Veterans Home for Christmas gifts this year. The motion was seconded and passed.

It was announced that the dedication ceremony for the Bloomfield cemetery would be at 2 p.m. on Oct. 12.

Nancy Hunter NSDAR

The Nancy Hunter Chapter NSDAR met Sept. 24 in the multipurpose room of Chateau Girardeau for a luncheon meeting.

Dorothy Points gave a report on the Lewis and Clark expedition and the part DAR can play in its celebration. She also gave the president general's message.

Jeannine McGinnis gave a report on national defense.

The group was approached about paying for the cake at its Good Citizens and American History Awards, which is a community meeting. A motion was made by Catherine Allison to pay for the cake and seconded by Geneva Wiggs with all approving to buy the cake.

Delegates were elected for NSDAR 113th Continental Congress held in July in Washington, D.C. They are Katherine Tolson and Points. Alternates are Mary Lou Lett, Lois Spalding, Ruth Lane and Sharon Rowland.

Tolson reported on the district meeting held in Poplar Bluff and new officers for the coming year.

Peter Yaremko was the speaker, telling about current events and how it compares to the way the Constitution of the United States was set up.

The next meeting will be Oct. 22 at the Cape Girardeau Public Library with Points speaking on Insignia.
