Madge Abernathy, 90, of Bethany Lutheran Village in Centerville, Ohio, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2003, at Kettering Memorial Hospital.
She was born Feb. 28, 1913, in Oran, Mo., daughter of Theodore and Ethel Davis Obermiller. She and Sterling H. Abernathy were married July 26, 1945, in Little Rock, Ark.
Mrs. Abernathy graduated from Jackson High School and attended Southeast Missouri State University. She taught in St. Louis before she married.
During her years of marriage as an Army wife, she called many places home, including South Carolina, Tennessee, Kansas, Georgia, Michigan, Indiana and Alabama, as well as Germany and Korea. She was active in her military communities as a scout leader, Sunday School teacher, and hospital volunteer.
She and Sterling retired in Huntsville, Ala., and lived there 34 years before moving to Centerville in three years ago. Madge was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Huntsville 30 years.
Survivors include her husband of Bethany Lutheran Village; two sons and daughters-in-law, Sterling and Nancy Abernathy III of Kettering, Steve and Janet Abernathy of Kingwood, Texas; a sister, Martha Egley of Webster Groves, Mo.; two brothers, James Obermiller of Grand Rapids, Mich. and Jack Obermiller of Cape Girardeau; two grandchildren, Matthew Abernathy and Susan Abernathy of Kingwood.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at David's Mausoleum, 4600 Mad River Road, Kettering. Burial will be in David's Cemetery.
The family will greet friends one half hour prior to the funeral at the mausoleum.
Routsong Funeral Home in Dayton, Ohio, is in charge of arrangements.
