Efforts to build a riverfront park at Cape Girardeau get a boost with the announcement that a Chamber of Commerce fund drive to help build the park has been established and that the Army Corps of Engineers is expected to approve the park plans shortly.
Construction has been started in Scott City on a 100,000-square-foot, pre-engineered building by Penzel Construction Co. of Jackson. Gene Penzel, president of the firm, says the structure, which will likely have future usage as a commercial or industrial structure, should be completed in October.
First draft of written policies to govern actions of the Cape Girardeau School Board is given to members at its regular meeting; a three-member committee is appointed to study and revise the material before it goes into final form.
Lindsay W. Simmons, president of the First Federal Savings & Loan Association in Cape Girardeau, is advised that his appointment as a member of the State College Board of Regents has been confirmed by the Senate; he succeeds Russell L. Dearmont of St. Louis.
BENTON, Mo. -- With but a few subscribers left, the board of the Watermelon Telephone Co. here decided to quit business; the company had been in business, serving Benton, Commerce, Mo., Oran, Mo., Blodgett, Mo., and Kelso, Mo., for 22 years.
Fire chief George D. French says he has orders from City Commissioner E.P. Ellis to use the new fire truck at fires only in the business district, except in case of dangerous conflagrations; it is believed the small Dodge pumper now equipped with a booster tank will be sufficient to use in most residential fires.
William Nenninger, who has been running the meat market in Haarig, which was recently bought by Clem Hoeller, has taken a job at the Union Meat Market across the street.
The Cape Girardeau City Council awards the contract for the city printing to The Daily Republican; during the coming year, all the new ordinances, resolutions, proceedings of the council and all other actions of the city government will appear in this newspaper.
