Wage increases averaging 10 percent will be passed on to Southeast Missouri State University employees during the 1983 fiscal year, which starts next month, it was decided yesterday by the board of regents; in addition, the board discussed how best to allocate the rest of the university's $23,568,498 operating budget for the new fiscal year.

BENTON, Mo. -- Hess Porter has been the Scott County treasurer for 40 years and, at 69, is the oldest county treasurer in the state; Porter has decided to retire and, come August when the county holds its primary election, his name won't be on the ballot for the first time in more than four decades.

50 years ago: June 5, 1957

The Cape Girardeau Junior High School band, 80 strong, goes to Car-uthersville, Mo., to participate in a parade marking the formal opening of the town's centennial celebration; the band is accompanied by director Bill Ewing, Mrs. John C. Magill and Mrs. H.T. Murphy.

Burl Cummings has been elected grand knight of St. Vincent's Council 1111, Knights of Columbus; Cummings, a member of St. Mary's Cathedral Parish, is employed in the local office of the Missouri State Employment service.

75 years ago: June 5, 1932

Christ Evangelical Church observes its annual Mission Day with two services; speaker at both is Dr. C.W. Locher of Webster Groves, Mo., president of the Evangelical Synod in the United States.

Six boys and one girl received diplomas from John S. Cobb School on Friday night at St. James A.M.E. Church; graduates were Hazel Hall, Ernest Cooper, George Miller, Wilbert Nance, Orlanza Staton, Paul Parks and William Green; J.A. Whiteford, superintendent of schools, addressed the graduates.

100 years ago: June 5, 1907

The saloon in Mill Town, which the County Court in February foisted on the people of Cape Girardeau despite the pleadings of the property owners, is furnishing some great times; the neighborhood is disrupted daily with fights.

J.B. Schneider and son, J.J., have moved to Cape Girardeau from St. Louis; about July 1, they plan to open a china, glassware and general racket store in the Meyer building, 514 Broadway.
