KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- A Kansas City police officer was recovering Tuesday after being shot while trying to pull over a fleeing driver in a stolen car.

The officer, who was identified only as a 9-year veteran to the department, tried to pull over a black Camaro around 3 a.m. Tuesday when the vehicle sped off.

The car had been taken late Sunday or early Monday in a carjacking in Kansas City, Kan., police spokesman Darin Snapp said.

After a short chase, the Camaro suddenly stopped and the driver began firing at the officer. The officer returned fire but was hit in the leg, police said.

The 18-year-old suspect fled on foot and was bitten in the groin when a police dog found him hiding in a garage.

The suspect and the wounded officer were taken to hospitals. Their injuries were not considered life-threatening.

During the arrest, two other officer sustained minor injuries. One of the officers was bitten by a dog while scuffling with the suspect, and the other officer bumped his head while getting out of his patrol car.

Snapp said the suspect was wanted for at least two other carjackings in the area and that charges were expected to be filed later Tuesday.
