Eastside Homemakers The Eastside Homemakers met Sept. 17 at Golden Gate Restaurant in Jackson. After lunch, a short business meeting was held. Each member brought a short article to share. Jackson VFW Auxiliary 10495

The September meeting of the Jackson VFW Auxiliary 10495 was held at Riverside Regional Library in Jackson.

Darlene Fluegge presided over the meeting with 13 members present.

It's time for the Voice of Democracy essay contest, promoted by the auxiliary for students in 9th through 12th grades. Contact Mr. Clubb, speech teacher at Jackson High School, for more information. The theme is "My commitment to America's future."

The next meeting will be Oct. 9 at Riverside Regional Library.

Laureate Alpha Rho

Laureate Alpha Rho Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met on Oct. 4 at the home of Dorothy Miles.Thank-you cards from two members who had recently been hospitalized were read and passed around.

Bonnie Hennessy and Edna Hey reported on the recent city council meeting they attended.

No plans have yet been finalized for the Preferential Tea and it was noted that the Exemplar Preceptor dinner will be held on Nov. 20, with Xi Nu Phi Chapter in charge.

The social committee, Miles and Marion Edwards, reported that plans for the annual Christmas dinner have been finalized and it will be held the first Thursday in December at 11:30 a.m. at the Cape Girardeau Country Club.

It was moved and seconded that names for secret pals will now be drawn instead of being selected by the chairman. The next meeting will be held at the home of Rosanna Whitnel and will be an outdoor barbecue at noon.

The program was presented by Miles, on a trip she and her husband made to Copper Canyon in Mexico.

New Salem UMW

The regular meeting of United Methodist Women of New Salem United Methodist Church at Daisy was held in the home of Goldie Hobeck. There were seven members and one visitor present.

The new altar cloths have been received and have been put in place. The fall meeting will be held in Dexter, Mo., on Oct. 25.

Sixty-eight pints of apple butter have been made to be sold at the annual fall supper on Oct. 18.

During new business, it was reported the prayer chain will be revised. Plans were completed for the Thanksgiving supper to be held at the next meeting for members and their spouses.

The nominating committee reported on the new officers for the coming year.

The program was given by Betty Perry, "World Thanks Offering -- Giving Thanks."

Cape Girardeau County RTA

The Retired Teachers of Cape Girardeau County met Oct. 1 at Chateau Girardeau. The program was given by Jack Smoot, manager of Bollinger Mill State Historic Site for 20 years. His presentation about the rich history of the mill and the covered bridge at Burfordville was a visual treat.

The next meeting will be Nov. 5 at Chateau Girardeau. The program will be a Missouri legislation report by Rep. Jason Crowell.
