Octoberfest at Black Forest this weekend

The 13th annual Octoberfest will be presented Saturday and Sunday at Black Forest Village.

Octoberfest will offer traditional working crafts, fine arts, kettle popped corn and barbecue sandwiches, apple cider and bluegrass music by the Coyote Creek Band.

Admission is $2 for adults. Children 12 and under get in free.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

The village is located 4 miles north of Cape Girardeau on County Road 638. From Highway 61 in Cape Girardeau, take Lexington to Route W, turn right at the stop sign and watch for signs.

Rodeo Roundup at Saltpetre Cave

MURPHYSBORO, Ill. -- The Rodeo Roundup, a weekend of rodeo events, music, traditional crafts and camping, begins today at the Saltpetre Cave.

Besides the rodeo Saturday, the event will include a horse show on Sunday. Music will be provided by Jackson Junction, the Woodbox Gang, Old Santa Fe, Bob Tyson, Non-stop Reggae, Slim Pickins and Codie.

The cave is located 7 miles south of Murphysboro on Highway 127. Entertainment starts at 4 p.m. today. The music starts at 1 p.m. followed by the rodeo at 2 p.m. Saturday. Music begins again at noon Sunday with the horse show at 1 p.m.

Tickets are $12 per day or $15 for a weekend pass.

'Full Tilt' dance auditions Sunday

Auditions for the annual "Full Tilt" dance showcase at Southeast Missouri State University will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Oct. 12.

Auditions will be held in Room 210 at Parker Dance Studio. No prior experience is required. Those auditioning should dress in dance or workout clothing and either dance shoes or no shoes.

Duo flute recital Sunday at St. Vincent's

Flutists Paul Thompson and Jessica Terry will present a duo flute recital Oct. 12 at Old St. Vincent's Church in Cape Girardeau.

Thompson is a flute instructor at Southeast Missouri State University. Terry is a student at the University of Missouri at Kansas City Conservatory. She is a recent winner of the Missouri Music Teachers National Association District Competition.

They will be joined by Matt Yount on piano, Mary Miller on harpsichord and Kirk Miller on cello.

The duet program will include "Trisonata" by J.S. Bach, Hindemith's "Canonic Sonatina" for two flutes and the "Duettino Americain" by Franz Doppler. Terry will perform Ibert's "Piece for Unaccompanied Flute," and Thompson will premiere "Atacameno Eluwun," a work for solo flute and tape by Dr. Robert Fruehwald, a professor of music at Southeast Missouri State University.

The concert will begin at 3 p.m. Tickets are $7 general, $6 for Southeast faculty, staff and senior citizens and $5 for students in advance. Phone the Performing Arts Box Office at 651-2265 for information.

Rhinehart show opens today

STE. GENEVIEVE, Mo. -- A one-man show by Charles Milton Rhinehart, a member of the original Ste. Genevieve Art Colony of the 1930s, will be presented today through Sunday at the Mammy Shaw House.

The public is invited to visit with the artist at a reception from 6 to 9 p.m. today.

The exhibition will include Rhinehart's painting "On the Jack's Forks" along with several paintings in private collections. He also will exhibit new canvases, many available for purchase.

The Mammy Shaw House is located at Second and Merchant streets.

Singers team up for house concert

Singer/songwriters Greg Klyma of Buffalo, N.Y., and Bill Passalacqua of Austin, Texas, will perform Thursday in Cape Girardeau as part of the Underberg House Concert Series.

Klyma is known for the diversity of his performances, combining love and protest songs and fingerpicking. Passalacqua is a traditional folk singer who sang his song "Inside Trade" when Ralph Nader announced his run for president in the 2000 election.

The concert is at $7. The suggested donation is $8. Phone 334-7692 for reservations and directions.

SONiA to perform Oct. 17

Singer/songwriter SONiA will perform Oct. 17 in Cape Girardeau.

SONiA appears at Phil Ochs tribute concerts and is an alumnus of the Lilith Fair. She combines originals with songs by Springsteen, Joni Mitchell, Dylan and others.

The concert is at 8 p.m. at Visions of Pride LGBT Community Center, 30 N. Pacific St. A $10 donation is suggested.

Cape Central orchestras to perform concert

The Cape Central Freshman Orchestra and the Cape Central Orchestra will give a free concert at 8 p.m. Thursday in the Cape Central Commons.

The orchestras are directed by Steve Schaffner.

'Same Time Next Year' to open Oct. 24

The River City Players will present Neil Simon's play "Same Time Next Year" Oct. 24-25, 30-31 and Nov. 1 at Port Cape's River City Yacht Club.

The two-person comedy will star Stacey Storey and Jeff Statler.

A show-only performance for $7 will be presented Oct. 30. All other performances are dinner theaters at $19.95.

Nashville singer at Grace Cafe

Singer-songwriter Joe Pagetta will perform Oct. 17 at Grace Cafe in Cape Girardeau.

Pagetta started out in New Jersey playing with the band Horror Time. As a soloist he performed at New York City's singer-songwriter clubs, drawing critical comparisons to Leonard Cohen and Dylan. He moved to Nashville in 1998. He has performed in Nashville at such venues as the Radio Cafe, Gibson's Guitar Cafe & Gallery and Exit/In.

He has released a CD titled "Recollections of Maybeville" and another called "Small Worlds."

No admission is charged but tips are welcome.
