Stands of corn in bottom land of Cape Girardeau and adjacent counties, particularly those planted late, are being seriously threatened by an infestation of black cutworms; Charles Knote, Cape Girardeau entomologist, says the worms are unusually heavy in their outbreak this year because of the excessive amount of wet weather.

Almost a sixth of the population of Cape Girardeau -- 4,091 persons on an official count, plus others -- turned out Saturday at the Arena Building to receive smallpox vaccinations at a free clinic provided by the Cape County Medical Society and the Missouri Division of Health.

75 years ago: June 24, 1932

After a two-hour stop at Cape Girardeau, the steamer Cape Girardeau continues to St. Louis on its return trip from the annual cruise to Muscle Shoals, Ala.; Capt. William H. "Buck" Leyhe stops here long enough to chat with friends and remark on the pleasantness of the voyage.

L.O. Groseclose, whose land is located along the southern line of Cape Girardeau County, starts his threshing machine going; so far as is known, he is the first man in the county to begin threshing wheat this season.

100 years ago: June 24, 1907

Broadway is to have another fine new store room; J.B. Schneider and son have come to Cape Girardeau from East St. Louis, Ill., and will open a fine line of queensware and racket store merchandise in the Meyer Bros.' building; they expect to open for business on Saturday.

The residents of Allenville are preparing to move the Baptist church to a new location in the town; the present one is located where the overflow of the Whitewater River gets into the church.
