Promotion for his store has paid off in more than increased sales for a Cape Girardeau man; Norman Ueleke of Ueleke Hardware Inc. won first prize for promoting hardware in Missouri during National Hardware Week; Ueleke won $100 for having the best promotional campaign in the state.

Carolyn Penzel, 10, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Penzel of Cape Girardeau, Saturday will cut a silken ribbon stretched across the Missouri end of the traffic bridge spanning the Mississippi River to make the lifting of tolls official.

75 years ago: June 27, 1932

The Tea Room, operated by Mrs. Gordon McCarthy, has moved from its former location on West Broadway in Cape Girardeau to the residence on North Fountain Street, just at the rear of the Federal Building.

After accepting the resignation of Alice A. Jones, home economics teacher in John S. Cobb School, the Cape Girardeau School Board elects Hazel Anderson of Tiffin, Ohio; the latter is a graduate of Wilberforce University in Wilberforce, Ohio, and has taught at Lane College.

100 years ago: June 27, 1907

The shoe factory committee decides to hold the town lot drawing on the morning of July 8 in Cape Girardeau; it is also decided that there will be a ticket for each lot and for each person who has paid for a lot; these tickets will be placed in separate receptacles; one of each will be drawn out at a time, and in this way the lots will be given out; sale of the lots will help finance construction of the new factory here.

Ed Litterer comes down to Cape Girardeau from St. Louis for a visit with his parents; he has a job in the big city.
